Lorry driving is fun. It’s just the hours (and sometimes pay), that’s ■■■■!

Never understood the guys who constantly say how rubbish the pay/conditions are. Nobody has a gun to their head, more than welcome to go and get a job in a warehouse or Tesco or wherever they think is a better job

+1
Maybe im in a minority but I love it.
Course im agency so I can work when I like and it suits my lifestyle…

There isn’t enough ‘love its’ about though. If there was there wouldn’t be a ‘driver shortage’ would there? Most jobs at our end of the pay scale are crap. No ifs no buts it’s just the way it is! And of course anything new and fresh is great but soon becomes worn and jaded over time. [emoji57]

Just having a moan! [emoji15]

I love it. Wish I’d got my license years ago!

It’s not the job that’s rubbish but some firms make it rubbish…
Get a good firm a good truck and a good gaffer who pays a fair wage & leaves you alone to do the job then it’s one of the best jobs ever.
On the other side,
Mate of mine hates it,thinks he has the hardest most demanding job on the planet, chases every last hour and crys like a baby if he ain’t out all week.
His gaffer pushes him to the edge day after day and he just takes it.
Don’t eat properly as he says he is too busy, massively overweight and stressed.
Fall in to the trap he is in and it really is a rubbish job

Some of us have been doing the job since a time when the pay and conditions weren’t rubbish

I’ve had people since I started saying give it long enough and you’ll hate it. Well, 20 years later I still love it, it may not be best for pay and conditions but sitting in your own climate controlled environment listening to Radio all day takes enjoying the scenery some beating

Yeah true, I’ve only been driving trucks 17 years :grimacing:
I personally wouldn’t work a job where conditions and pay were “rubbish” but if others do then good luck to them

I don’t work for a bad firm either, and I’ve never driven an artic for less than £10 an hour. But the poor facilities and bad customers we face on the road aren’t the fault of my company. Kudos to you if you’ve found a niche where you don’t have to put up with the same crap outside the gates of your yard, that most have to

Agree but the latter is rapidly replacing the former, the good old fashioned family firms are gradually disappearing as the next generation are not interested in taking over the business from their parents etc.

Any job you do you’ll have to deal with idiots and crap, just how life is these days. Pretty sure we all get the odd day when we think “screw this” but if I felt like that all the time I’d change career. You only have to sit in a rdc for 5 minutes and you’ll hear some fool saying how bad the job is blah blah blah.

That’s why I steer clear of rdc waiting rooms

They’re not known as Rubbish Dispersal Centres for nothing.

I think some people get cabin fever after driving 2hrs to a drop and that makes them go in the waiting room and tell anyone that’ll listen random made up garbage or “my mate told me” stories

Passing the test is straight-forward.
Paying to train for it is not.

Getting a job as a HGV driver is straight forward.
Getting a job that pays enough to make you feel like a pro worker - is not.

Starting out with a clean licence is straight foward.
Keeping it clean past the slings and arrows of outrageous VOSA - is not.

Finding an agency that “has clients asking for you by name” is straight forward.
Finding one that never f—s you about - is not.

It’s been three years since my last venture into an RDC waiting room, doing a drop at Dagenham Tescos for F&W on Agency.

Needless to say, I’m managing better these days to avoid entering such places outright.
The Dagenham place was new and clean, and even had a couple of old newspapers on a table to be read.
They didn’t have access to hot food at night though, and there’s nothing on TV.

Thanks - I’d rather stay in my cab, but that’s not allowed for delivery drivers to Tescos alas… :imp:

The worst waiting room in my experience was “The Cooler” at Didcot, being run by nobby dressingtables at that time.
I was supposed to be evicted from the cab, but I left my passenger door open, snuk back in, and drew my curtains…

No go though.

Yard Marshall guy catches me minutes later, and warns me that I’ll be banned from site if I dare try such a thing to circumvent H&S rules again!

F… That place. If I never go back there again - it’ll be too soon. :imp:
