Brilliant I haven’t seen “Pinnochio” for about 8 yrs. He was with Yare Haulage (fully owned subsidiary off Frans Maas) til the end, Christmas 2004. I later bumped into him a few times in the couple off years after that.
In the mid 90’s, Pinnochio was one the original Scottish trunkers, a nightly trunk between Great Yarmouth and Denny (Scotland) up one night home the next, 5 round trips a fortnight. that was some years after that 2500 was retired though.
The name Pinnochio was mostly for his nose, I’ll leave other thoughts to your imagination. but a funny guy to work with
Thanks Bert

I know Big Foot too, in fact “Dave” has only recently retired, but for the last 10 yrs was doing container work from Felixstowe, the same as Me these days. He spent the last 2 yrs doing a week at work then a week at home, to ease him into retired life.
He was at Yare Haulage for 20 +years, he did a lot of continental work, one of the trucks he drove was a Renault Magnum, it was the 1st Frans Maas uk truck brought to do high cube trailers, truck and trailer on little wheels, and was mainly on contract to Phillips between Durham and Eindhoven. I cant now remember if it was blue and yellow FM, or white and blue Phillips
Thanks Bert
Hi Eddie,

Hi Eddy,Here i have a other photo of Roadway(s) Dont no of this was a other company working fore Frans Maas U.K. at Brownhills.
Yes that is the same Roadways as
Bert Wolters:
[Here i have a photo of a old Scania off Roadway with a licenplate GEO IX and a trailer of Frans Maas Brownhills.Al the best, Bert
They worked for Frans Maas Brownhills, which were mainly driver accompanied European work, and for Frans Maas Great Yarmouth, for unaccompanied port traction work. Roadways also ran a number off rigid curtain siders, doing local and UK delivery and collection work for FM Brownhills.
Kevin(owner off Roadways), also brought another company doing international work, that was called Nicholls haulage. Nicholls carried on in their name for many years under the ownership off Roadways.
I don’t know where the original yard for Roadways was, but in the late 80’s early 90’s the truck seemed to be in or about the Brownhills depot at Maybrook Road, and My memory says that they had a workshop adjacent to the Brownhill depot.
Sometime during the 1990’s Roadways took on a new yard a few miles away at Brickyard Road Aldridge, and about this time Roadways started doing Container Haulage. As I remember, around this time, mid 90’s, they brought some MAN’s, and then about 2000 they started to buy Renault Premiums for domestic work and a few Magnums, that mainly went to the continent.
As the container side grew, the relationship with Frans Maas seemed to dwindle (early 2000’s), and as with many off us doing the unaccompanied port traction, I think that Roadways saw the writing on the wall and put more behind the Container work.
This is what I saw from the outside (as another Frans Maas subby), I never worked for Roadways but worked with a lot off their drivers.
As for the other 2 photos you have placed here Bert, well I don’t know either off them, sorry

Chalkey,
I remember most of those lads from P&O, and Roadways that did Italy for Frans Maas. Used to meet up with them every week at Piotello, Milano. As I remember Kevin ? At Roadways had a old Red Scania registered GEO 1V, .You’re right about that reg belonging to Kevin/ Roadways. GEO 1V as I remember it was on a dark blue Tag axled 111, in the early 90’s as I recall it. A chap called Tim drove it on unaccompanied work for Frans Maas mainly out off Felixstowe.

‘EO’ is a Barrow registration, so this must have started life as a T Brady and Son(s) Scania.

Hi Eddie and Robert.
That photo of de scrap DAF 2600 was taken afther1992 on the scrapyard of C.A.B. at Weert in the Netherlands. It was before a unit of Frans Maas Groningen til 1978. In that year it was sold to C.A.F. at Weert and was standing there with order ex Frans Maas units. In order of the gouverment C.A.B. must clean op the scrapyard. Plenty of old truck units are going fore scrap metal.

By C.A.B. at Weert are stil two old Frans Maas trailers left to bay als oldtimer.

Would that have been the same Alan that had a documentary made about him as an owner driver in the mdi 80’s, just thought with it being hooked upto a BET trailer, and an IVECO
Reckon He brought that motor from Norfolk trucks, or the original owner did, as the VG suffix used to be one of the Norfolk suffix’s
Still hoping to locate the Cockney Cowboy, I used to work with a guy who would know, but we are only aquaintances, so if I see him on the road we have a catch up, but I have no other means of contact
Thanks Bert
