Chalkey,
I remember most of those lads from P&O, and Roadways that did Italy for Frans Maas. Used to meet up with them every week at Piotello, Milano. As I remember Kevin ? At Roadways had a old Red Scania registered GEO 1V, .

You’re right about that reg belonging to Kevin/ Roadways. GEO 1V as I remember it was on a dark blue Tag axled 111, in the early 90’s as I recall it. A chap called Tim drove it on unaccompanied work for Frans Maas mainly out off Felixstowe.

Hi Archie and Eddy,

Here i have a photo of a old Scania off Roadway with a licenplate GEO IX and a trailer of Frans Maas Brownhills.

Al the best, Bert

Now My head hurts, maybe it was that truck, but it had been sprayed dark blue with a yellow stripe, unless Roadways had 2 similar

Still keep them coming Bert

I think that old spread axle tilt, might have been one off those that had roof frames, instead off roof bars, a killer when stripping to load at the likes of British steel Corby, what with their ever helpful attitude to drivers :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:

Hi Eddy,

Here i have a other photo of Roadway(s) Dont no of this was a other company working fore Frans Maas U.K. at Brownhills.

Here i have a old Scania 111 with a old Frans Maas trailer going out in the port of Dover. It’s blue with a wiht roof.

They worked for Frans Maas Brownhills, which were mainly driver accompanied European work, and for Frans Maas Great Yarmouth, for unaccompanied port traction work. Roadways also ran a number off rigid curtain siders, doing local and UK delivery and collection work for FM Brownhills.

Kevin(owner off Roadways), also brought another company doing international work, that was called Nicholls haulage. Nicholls carried on in their name for many years under the ownership off Roadways.

I don’t know where the original yard for Roadways was, but in the late 80’s early 90’s the truck seemed to be in or about the Brownhills depot at Maybrook Road, and My memory says that they had a workshop adjacent to the Brownhill depot.

Sometime during the 1990’s Roadways took on a new yard a few miles away at Brickyard Road Aldridge, and about this time Roadways started doing Container Haulage. As I remember, around this time, mid 90’s, they brought some MAN’s, and then about 2000 they started to buy Renault Premiums for domestic work and a few Magnums, that mainly went to the continent.

As the container side grew, the relationship with Frans Maas seemed to dwindle (early 2000’s), and as with many off us doing the unaccompanied port traction, I think that Roadways saw the writing on the wall and put more behind the Container work.

This is what I saw from the outside (as another Frans Maas subby), I never worked for Roadways but worked with a lot off their drivers.

As for the other 2 photos you have placed here Bert, well I don’t know either off them, sorry

‘EO’ is a Barrow registration, so this must have started life as a T Brady and Son(s) Scania.

I think it probably was, but I don’t recall Roadways running merc rigids, but its not too say they didn’t.

Looking at the Photo, it would have been a shot from the back off the depot. The other side off the nearest warehouse is loading docks, built to the typical Frans Maas style, canopy over an open dock. The larger warehouse adjacent(behind) was built about 2000 if I remember correctly, it is all pallet racking, and was built to take the GE Plastics contract, previously based at the Great Yarmouth depot(my depot) and a contract for distribution off shoes for a large retailer, which Frans Maas Brownhills had won, that also included some retailer liveried MAN artics.

Hope this is of interest to you Bert,

Here i have a photo of the front side of the lager of Frans Maas Brownhills taken in the 90’s. On the right a Scania tractor in the old colours of Frans Maas Brownhills.

Blimey did a double take on that Bert, for a moment thought it might have been My Turboliner far left, but mine had a white grill.

Great photo, taken before the new warehouse was built in the left off the yard

I wish I had taken more than the few photos I had, of my times with Frans Maas
