Bert,
still haven’t got a working scanner, however in the meantime you asked for these pictures from Webshots. They are all Frans Maas Tilbury trucks, including some rentals.

we had MAN’s, this one at TransMarck, France. For a long time the trucks ran in Automotive Logistics UK livery, a partnership between Frans Maas, Toyota, BRS, and some more I cant remember, but can look up. Note the number plate, FML means Frans Maas Limited.

parked in the Spanish sunset, on the way to FM Madrid.

trailer change at FM Irun. the TOY on number plate means Toyota. Generally the trailers that had Frans Maas on them, rather than ALUK went to Spain.

…but not always! both trucks on way back from Spain, one from Irun, the other from Madrid, meeting up near Orleans, France.

a rental truck & trailer at Frans Maas Kontich, Belguim.

another rental, an ex Edwin Shirley Volvo, Kontich.

another rental, we had 2 black FH’s, this time at Transmarck.

L11 FML was on the train that caught on fire in the Channel Tunnel. Here it is returned ot the yard, it was pressure washed before being brought back, but is still black. Note the melted grill. It was repainted, but still smelt badly of smoke.

1st 4 series Scanias, on route to Madrid.

a regular stop for me, the 47km bar north of Madrid.

L20 TOY, last trip to Spain, Irun, before the 3 series went, the 4 series had replaced them.

another rental, at Toyota, Diest, Belgium. This FM was too small to use on European work, having to lie on the bed to get dressed!

but by far these were the worst! We went to Switzerland with post in these, absolutely terrible! Rented from BRS, they had Frans Maas logos on the cab sides.

Hello Bert I have just logged on to this website and I have seen the photo of the MAN VS 31 BH I drove this lorry from new around 1991 or so It ran out of the Frans Maas depot in waddinxveen near Gouda I ran all the time to Turkey Frans Maas had dedicated trailers that only whent to one destination This tractor was one of two the other had a Turkish driver They belonged to Leo Stolk who had a number of trucks sub contracted from Antwerp We used to go overland through Romania and Yugoslavia The Balkans war was going on but we still drove through yugoslavia till one of the other Englis drivers called Charlie Papworth had an accident and the insurance would not pay so we were fobidden to go that way any longer and we had to start going by ferry from Bari and Brindisi in Italy to Greece and then into Turkey That turned out to be ball ache so I finished working for Stolk and started working for an English firm doing the same work… I understand that these were probably the first truks to be put on liitle wheels. They were a pain in the neck on snow and ice and very hard to drive in those conditions . They did however have Voight retarders on which were very useful as we were usually heavy… All the best Handbag

Hallo Handbag.

Thanks for the story. I no that ther was self dirive trips to Greece from Oostrum with Rank Xerox but i did not no to Turkey. Also from Waddinxveen i did not no that. I have been plenty off times to Frans Maas at Waddinxveen to load groupage from south Europe to Sweden , Danmark , Norway and Finland. Later also for Polen, Estland, Letland and Litouwen.
Maybe i ask to must but have you photos from those trips and will you put them on this side. It wil be nice to see them. Never see photos from Frans Maas in those countrys.
Also i did no that the MAN was from an subcontractor. But not from who. In that time only Frans Maas Groningen and Venlo had own tractors. The colours and striping ar from Frans Maas Groningen. Had al the tractors from Leo Stolk the colours off Frans Maas ?

Regards, Bert Wolters

Hello Bert That was a prompt reply to my posting… Yes I Have quite a few photos of this MAN and I will try to post them on this site but all this technology is new to me and I struggle a bit… I am 70 years old now and still driving but only part time just to keep my hand in… The MAN’s were the only trucks in Frans Maas colours The others were DAF 95’s painted cream & red Belgian registered from Antwerp I can’t just remember the name it was 3 letters containing an A for Antwerp in the name it will come to me later I am sure… We used to have a great time going to Turkey A lad called John Hiscock (Male Model) used to run with me in a DAF and before the days of speed limiters we used to chase up through Greece… The Man had a speed limiter fitted but it only used to come on at 120k/h I could not catch John becausehis Daf had no limiter and he used to clear off at 130 or 140 no kidding The Greeks would try to race us but they used to bottle out at 110 All the best Handbag
