How to tell if you're a REAL driver!

Must admit I love my maps. I’ve bought one for almost every town I’ve ever been. They do take up a lot of room but I only take the ones I’m likely to use. Milan, Turin, Sydney and Brisbane are not much use on a trip from here to Blighty although if I was still tramping I would have taken all the European ones.

I never throw one away and one or two have the price on - 5/- :open_mouth:

I have Autoroute on the PC and print off relevant maps from that before each trip, but I tell it what to do, not the other way round.

If I go back on the road full time I’ll get a satnav, but I won’t give up the maps.

Salut, David.

I’m afraid I’m the ashamed owner of 52 of them. I really MUST get rid and go over to satnav…no point having a spacecab and filling it with maps…imagine what it was like in the P-cab!!! Tramping!!! :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

Luce, your more than welcome to have my Sat nav on a long term borrow! At the mo its sat on my desk showing me the way to nowhere!

Use satnav, but do carry 2 maps with me. One is just a normal road map of the UK the other is my trusty and very well worn early 90’s edition of the London AtoZ, still don’t like using satnav in the very center of London but it is fine everywhere else I have used it. Would not want to go back to paper maps now, far too much hassle.

i remember people telling me that you didnt need maps and to just use a road atlas to get to the area then ask…

in my opinion to use the sat nav effectivley you need to be able to read a map

and of course owning maps dosnt mean you have the ability to read them properly

you have reached the end of your post please stop typing

i dont know who this real driver is cos Rob gave up trucking in July

“Finished with trucking now. That’s me done with it” (rob k from his post on his week at work)

so whats he doing with them maps

pre edited version was much funnier and I dare say truer

Yeah I thought so but Rob started crying and I was ordered to edit it. :unamused: :unamused:

ahhhhhhhh bless the little fella

To bring this subject back on topic , to save the mods getting a barage of whining PMs , I would like to have a Tom Tom or the such but having recently spent toooooo much on a Road Angel 2 I cant really justify having another £300 stuck in my windsreen, maybe after christmas.

I have my bottom underbunk draw in my FH packed full of maps which will be looked at now once in a bluemoon , I think if I had a TomTom or the such I would have one cheap old map and one Navigator big map which I brought when on animal feed deliverys, this is a big old map and cost about £25.00 some years back but was a vital piece of kit when delivering to old man Smiths farm at so and so out in the wilds somewhere.

rob k just out of interest how long have you been driving artics

    no answer was forthcoming on that one wylie

Well Rob you seem to have got all the maps but they do look a bit new and un-used to me. Did you take the picture at a car boot sale where someone was selling road maps ■■?

ive got a load of maps but would like to try sat nav but the place im at at the moment gives you maps with your deliverys but being onthe agency i cant carry all my maps but if i had the same lorry they would be in it. im also one of those that can look at the map the night before then next morning drive straight there.

sad i know but im a belt and braces man take load of maps and sat nav

I dont really have the option to use sat nav for 3 reasons

1… i cant justify/afford to lay out £3-400 on it
2… the company where i work barely give you enough of an address to use with it
3… i pretty much do the same jobs all the time so this job doesnt warrant it

But if i was to get a job where it would be of use i would find the money and buy one

I can proudly say I’m not a “real trucker” as I like to think that I’m living in the 21st centuary.

If using somthing that makes you safer, more relaxed & use less fuel means I’m not a “real trucker” in an experts opinion then I’m glad toe a “plastic trucker” as has been implied

Following the same train of thought maybe we should :-

Still be driving constant mesh boxes
Sleeping on planks across the seats
Throw away night heaters
choke on pre-Euro 1 exhaust fumes while hooking up (oh the tears)
Running on steel springs
etc etc

It’s called progress!

But If Rob got lost he could always ask the Guy walking in front who’s waving the red flag.

As i remember those philips ones are between £9.99 and £14.99 each so thats between £519 and £779 worth! :open_mouth:

Maybe you should invest in a padlock and a steel box to keep them in.

Having said that the plastic box of them would be heavy enough, if you tipped the motor over or somthing dont think i’d fancy being hit by them!

Well I’m the same as Rob and probably the same amount. I started buying them as soon as I got my licence a couple of years ago. My way of thinking was I’d have enough stress coping with the vehicle without having to worry about whereabouts my next drop was.

However with hindsight I should have just bought a laptop with routing software. I could have used it to watch movies on nights out or play games (if I was so inclined) or numerous other things. But 'cos I’ve spent so much on the maps I can’t now bring myself to spend more dosh.

Satnav?? I’m sure its fine, in fact I’ve owned a small handheld Garmin for some years now which I use when I’m walking in the hills.
But as daft as it sounds I don’t think I could be doing with someone telling me when to turn etc etc. I’m not very good at taking orders at the best of times and it would probably be only a matter of time before I gave it a slap.

A customer once asked me if we had satnav fitted…I said they might get round to it after they fit a mobile phone.

I use maps and if I get stuck I find a phone box, reverse the charges and let the office sort their mess out.

My opinion is that if somebody gives you an address it should be findable with the traditional tool for the job…a map.
