it is a simple question
you dont know why i am asking the question for all you know i might want to offer him a job

I carry two sets of maps covering most of Europe — right down to street level — and a Truckers Atlas and London A-Z.

One set is on a laptop — Microsoft MapPoint (more European coverage than Autoroute). I can also get on the Internet and use email on MS Outlook via a Bluetooth phone

The other is a Garmin Streetpilot GPS.

It surprises me that some of you “hunter gatherer” paper map die hards are actually on Trucknet — thought that would be too much technology for you! And I guess you wash your clothes by hand, cut the lawn with a sythe etc etc.

As for all the other stuff, live and let live (things like bird flu, and wasps, excepted  )

spaceman:
cut the lawn with a sythe

No i use a wife to cut the lawn

Now that i agree with all these witch hunts are getting rather petty :unamused: :unamused:

i remember people telling me that you didnt need maps and to just use a road atlas to get to the area then ask…

Chances are that I am one of those people and I still run primarily with an atlas. I also still believe that learning to read a map and getting a good geographical knowledge of the areas or countries you work in is a vital professional skill. I have also realised of late that I am shy away from technology I don’t understand (and that would be most of it! ) and as repton is on a mission to desensitise me to all forms of gadgetry it is making more sense. I would now consider running with sat nav but I don’t know wether I would trust it or better still trust myself to use it properly.

i gave in today and bought a ic320 navman … and its fantastic takes sometime to warm up and get going but when its is its fantastic.

how did i live without it :frowning: :frowning: :frowning: :frowning: :frowning:

plus i got it from comet and has someone had bought it back cos the screen wasnt big enough i only paid £150.00

im with you rob, my knuckles still drag on the ground (and the misses would go mental if i spent £300 on a electronic map) i can justify the odd £5.99/£10.

started collecting mine when i first started driving, multi drop genral haulage and to be honest there a god send. wouldn’t be without them.

I wasn’t going to comment on this thread as I haven’t had the pleasure (or otherwise) of experiencing satnav.
Must say though, i do like the overview of a map, but don’t have a collection, i’m one of the get near & ask brigade.

Anyway, yesterday afternoon a couple who had arranged an appointment with me at home to talk about Bulgarian property, hadn’t showed up 25 mins after the agreed time.
I got a phone call telling me they were lost…even though i’m very easy to find (just off the m/way) & had given them very clear instructions.

When they did roll up, turns out…

  1. They had ignored the instructions.
  2. Relied on the sat nav instead.
  3. Didn’t have a map with them.
  4. The satnav (bought 2 days ago) had packed up. :unamused:  :unamused:

Also, I’m pretty sure that had it still been working, it would have taken them to the centre of my post code area, which it seems is down a dead end some 1/2 mile away.

Now then you techie brigade, what you got to say about that?

as one of the tecjie brigade it depend what system they were using did they have it plugged in to the car

2 the may have an athermic windscreen which blocks sat signals

3 didn’t know how to use it

4 corrupted storage card

if they had put the postcode in then it would have taken them to your house
