How to tell if you're a REAL driver!

I suspect some people only have huge arm muscles in the one arm.

Rob K:
If you are, then you won’t have one of those patronising voices telling you that “you have arrived at your destination” when-you’re-stuck-down-a-farm-track Satnav devices, you’ll have one of THESE :

Nah. That just confirms you’re yet another moron who hasn’t tried them and just regurgitates the same old rubbish.

Oh and you’re still likely to end up down a farm track or completely lost when the village idiot has given you directions to a road not on your lovely paper maps - assuming they actually know the postal name of the road on your POD that they’ve called by its nickname of “the top road”?

Question: Just how safe do you think you are trying to drive a 44 tonne lorry through a busy city whilst holding one of those in your hand concentrating on it and trying to remember the route you planned as you’re looking at the page and the street name signs whislt trying to steer and change gear with the other hand all at the same time?

I use the same maps as well. All ring binders and all in a blue plastic box

I lurve the overview

Each drop or road I have ever delivered on is highlighted so when I check a strange address I know at a glance if I have been there before

The only areas not covered by Phillips are Mid Wales and that bit out beyond Swansea

Yet strangely Satnav covers those areas and I managed to find the roads I wanted in Twywn and Dolgellau. So much for you’re lovely maps - not alot of use in sparsely populated areas, mainly because the publishers don’t see a commercial viability to produce any.

Last time I looked at the availability list, there wasn’t one for Lincs because 195 pages would be fields and the other 5 would be towns :stuck_out_tongue: .

So much for map books - they miss out a large portion of the UK.

im nearly a real drver then
i have a laptop with autoroute on it , you still have to work out your own route but you dont have to lug a bloody great crate around with you

Just curious … why don’t you let Autoroute work out the route and you just check it ?, when I use Autoroute at home it seems to work out the routes well.

cos im one of those weird people who can look at a place on a map once ,and know how to get to it ,i dont know how ijust can
trouble is sometimes im so sure of where im going i (fb) it up completely ,my worst area is m62/m61 area ALLWAYS get it wrong must be the colour of the rose or something

pre edited version was much funnier and I dare say truer

A quick check of the Philips site shows the following new editions:

Carmarthen, Pembroke & Swansea
Powys
Ceredigion & South Gwynedd

along with Hereford & Monmouth; Anglesey, Conwy & Gwynedd; Denbighshire, Flintshire & Wrexham and Cardiff, Swansea & The Valleys that’s all of Wales covered…

Aberdeenshire
Inverness & Moray
Fife & Tayside
Lanarkshire
Ayrshire

along with Edinburgh & East Central Scotland and Glasgow & West Central Scotland that’s most of (populated) Scotland covered then.

As they already cover the whole of England then they don’t actually leave much out.

Satnav or maps…take your pick and go with what you’re comfortable with or what you can afford.

As a footnote…in my last job I went out with a mate who had a satnav and said he had downloaded the latest update the night before but after the second drop in Newcastle, the rest of the drops (further north) weren’t on his system but they were in the map. By the same token, I have seen some new estates on satnav that aren’t in the map - but I can always ask the customer where the nearest main road is and work things out from there using a map so I’m happy with them (and I can’t afford satnav anyway  )

Yeah I thought so but Rob started crying and I was ordered to edit it. :unamused: :unamused:

Sat Nav or Maps…

that is the question…

If anyone wants to get into a “I can pee higher” match with another member can they take it off this website and to E-Mail

I havent the time or inclination to babysit adults at the moment so can you all please play nice or dont play at all

Classic post from Rob!

Only the electronically challenged kids would need a box like that!

Sorry Rob, even the proper drivers like Mal and his ilk wouldn’t have a box like that! And if they did they wouldn’t dare tell anyone about it

lol

I can proudly say I’m not a “real trucker” as I like to think that I’m living in the 21st centuary.

If using somthing that makes you safer, more relaxed & use less fuel means I’m not a “real trucker” in an experts opinion then I’m glad toe a “plastic trucker” as has been implied

Following the same train of thought maybe we should :-

Still be driving constant mesh boxes
Sleeping on planks across the seats
Throw away night heaters
choke on pre-Euro 1 exhaust fumes while hooking up (oh the tears)
Running on steel springs
etc etc

It’s called progress!

rob k just out of interest how long have you been driving artics

Some have only recently been bought (Kent for example). Look at the West Yorks one, the cover’s only hanging on by a thread :smiling_imp: .

As a matter of interest how many books have you got there?
I estimate around 30 from the pic.
