REvosa counting miles from home as work time , could be fun with my situation, as i live in a campervan , suppose it would be “well, wot lay by where you in last night ? or, we will report you as what u are doing is illegal” note;not ■■■■■, divorced and VERY SKINT.
My grandad used to say;
“work starts the moment you walk out of the front door”.
Hell.Never did update this post.Well I ended up being one of the lucky ones who got to stay at felixstowe.Only five of us up there now.Mind you I leave there monday morn and end up staying in our yard at tilbury couple times a week. But get night out money for that.So not so bad.Hell they even got us a couple new mega space cabs.It about 6mths old.Mean’t I could keep hold of my gas guzzling car 2.Result.

I’m not ya grandad, and I’ve been saying that all my life!
“Work is defined as the actions of third parties that waste your time in exchange for financial renumeration, and starts from leaving your residence and finishes when your door closes again with you on the inside of it for the day.”
Anyone who says “Work” is merely “position one on a digitacho” needs reporting to BigVern!

for the whole of jan, I will travel from Chester to Sailsbury 220 miles Sunday eve, and travel back Friday aft. My firm provide hire car and fuel so its not to bad, I dont think I would want to do it all the time.
Does that not have to be recorded and included in your EC hours and RTD/WTD as your boss is providing it though ■■?
I seem to recall in the dim and distant past someone getting nabbed for that. In fact was it not Gerry Ormes lads ■■?
To make it work for you - you need an early start on Monday and an early finish on Friday. Unfortunately all the drivers already at Tilbury probably want the same thing. Might be worth asking though.
If you are out all week and its only driving there on Monday and back on Friday, I don’t see it as much of an issue. You’d be commuting 5hrs a week which is just over half what I did driving to and from work 30 miles a day 5 days a week.
Might have a big decision to make as of next friday.Basically after our firm cut the fleet from 25 to ten motors last april. They have now decided it’s round two and are transfering five motors from our felixstowe depot to tilbury. They have offered the five who get moved to tilbury a job down there on a three month trial basis. If whoever get’s picked does’nt want to go.It’s redundancy and bye bye.If you decide to leave before the trial period is up or you find another job. They will still give you your redundancy package.now my dilemer is that i live in lowestoft .(i know but someones got to).So if i am one of those chosen to go to tilbury.I will have a two and a half hour drive on a monday and a friday. How far would you guys travel to work?.

Chester. That a fair few miles.unfortunatley I’ve got to supply my own car and petrol. If i’m chosen to go down there.I’ll give it the three months and see how it goes.Fridays going to be a pain.A13 had a smash on it this aftnoon. Not good down there at the best times on a friday.
My new job has me travelling from Camborne to Exeter (100 miles each way…although good roads) This will be approx 2 hours each way
more like 3 to 4 in silly season
My last job was 75 miles each way…about 1/12 hours
semtex that will prob be my distance each week.Seems people are willing to do a bit of mileage to get to work.Might be time to buy a diesel car.Me thinks.
depends on how often you have to do the journey…
If its everyday I would think maximum 1 hour travelling.(I only have to go 5 minutes to work now)
But if its weekly you could extend that…I personally would say 3 hours max.
Once worked in Wellingborough and travelled from Crewe each week 2 hours each way. but on same firm was a guy who lived on the Isle of Man …he used to work 3 months on and then have 2 to 3 weeks off.
You’ll have to weigh up travelling costs and see if its worthwhile.
I know of people doing similar and being quite happy with it.
Wouldn’t do for me but each to their own.
I would look at this way…, 2.5 hours each way = 5hours , thats only the same as someone who travels 30 mins each way each day
Del 949.Breaking it down like that don’t make it sound so bad.Like i say got a thirsty petrol car at the mo.And only doing 100 mile a week round trip in that.It will only be tilbury and back once a week. Will be able to stay in the truck if not on a night out.so might not be to bad.
If it’s only one trip there and back while you stay out in the truck during the week it doesn’t sound too bad, if it’s two or three trips your gonna be losing out, depends how much you need the job I guess
I think Del949 has it right, but even then in your case you’re going from one short round trip a week to a long one, so it’s going to cost you a bit more, still, it’s a job.
Personally I’ve never had to go too far for work, there’s always been plenty of jobs around my way, but if push came to shove I’d do an hour each way per day, as long as the money was there to compensate, or if there was no work locally.
agree on the condition that you backload to lowestoft at the end of the week. then take the truck home.
That would be great in an ideal world limeyphil. They are’nt going to buy that though. Most of the work is in and around london, reels of paper to the printing industry.there’s sod all in lowestoft to deliver to anymore.Just like alot of seaside towns i guess.
I did Portland to Southampton quite happily for a couple of years. Took a couple of hours each way - more in silly season. But it paid me to do it, as there was no work locally unless I took a massive pay cut (bigger than the Southampton wage minus fuel etc.). Get a reliable diesel car and go for it, I say. A job’s a job. You can always leave when you find something better. The redundancy package would have to be pretty spectacular to choose to take it with the job market as it is at the moment.
