Hoveringham gravels

Lovely photos John. I am adding a photo of a Leyland Reiver model I have made. This was the first H.G.V. I drove on the road under the supervision of Fred Hodgkiss (Transport Foreman @ Hov. Quarry)

All seems to have gone quiet on this site ie no posts for a long time, shame that as i only just found the site. I started at Hov in 1968 then moved to Elvaston for a time then back to Hov then Colwick till that closed then back to Hov again. When Tarmac took over in 1984 i along with about 12 other drivers became ODs for Tarmac.most of us stayed at Hov till it closed in 2008. In 2008 i moved to Langford with a few other ODs till i retired in2012 having done 44years on the job. Steve Briggs.

Hi Steve, 44 years in the job, that’s great. all good times I hope… I think a lot of the posts from this group have moved to the ‘Hoveringham Gravels’ facebook page. Do you have any photographs that you would like to share?

Thanks for info re facebook will have a look on there. With regard to photos it has took me long enough to get a bit a handle on this so far, so photos are a bit of a no no for me, would maybe delete them all by mistake. All this stuff is a bit outside my comfort zone Steve.

Hi John, I’ll try to get some pictures on here at the weekend.

TARMAC:

Its not a lorry, but this is an aerial view of Hoveringham’s Asham Wood Quarry , on the Mendips from 1960’s, Redlands Westdown Quarry is on the right, later in 1973 both companies formed a joint venture company called RH Roadstone, (Redland - Hoveringham Roadstone) to quarry both quarries but from one set of crushing plant. Eventually being run by Tarmac, and the being sold to ARC, later Hanson in 1985. The Quarry will reopen again eventually, when reserves at nearby Hanson - Whatley run out… Any one get any more pictures of Asham Wood Quarry or Westdown with Hoveringham lorries in ?

This new 8 wheeler Foden had just been driven down from Nottingham. My Father Dennis Coke had just arrived back at the yard at Asham Quarry in the days before RH Roadstone. It’s a pity he was not in the picture. I can still smell the inside of the fibre glass cab! It looks like it was taken by the side of the weighbridge just up from the maintenance sheds. Hope you like it. Treasured photo.

Sorry if these have already been posted, thought they might be of interest.

Regards. John.

The Reunion was very well attended, we filled the bar @ The Reindeer Hoveringham. Many thanks to them and John Balch for arranging it. Hope to be there this coming December.

Hello Steve, good to hear from you, Ashley is right, most of us have migrated to the Facebook Hoveringham Gravels page, probably only because it’s easier to upload pictures. Cheers Andy

Looking for photos of hoveringham tippers especialy scammell artics and foden eight wheelers, during the 1970s.

Welcome to the forum Nigel, I know that Bonkey will have some pics for you when he sees your posting! I used to work out of Hoveringham’s sand hole at Hoveringham on the odd occasion when Ta…c had it, and of course they had a large limestone quarry at Cromford near where I live, also now owned by Ta…c! The Needlers Chocolate family owned Hoveringham if memory serves me correctly.

Pete.

They had a lot of leyland comet 4 wheel tippers in the 1960 in the notts/derby area these had light weight metallic bodies.wayne Robinson

I remember seeing them all over the place years ago, Were they a big firm something like Amey’s of Oxford in there day.

Try this for starters mate, I’ll see what I can do in the next few days - time allowing.

My father worked for Hoveringham and clocked up about 23 years service based in the southern region working from the quarry at Wyboston. He started on the maintenance side working on various machines and equipment finnishing off his time as fleet engineer. When Wyboston was closed he moved on with the company and worked from Gerrards Cross covering quarries at Newbury and Reading and also as far as Colchester,Tillingham,Rainham,Osset and the workshops at South Ockendon.I only have a few pictures of Hoveringham vehicles which i have posted today. The foden was one of three vehicles all fitted with Gardner 240 eight cylinder engines and reg nos VAL 667/668/669L. I believe the one in the picture was driven by Andy Crawford and taken at South Ockendon. The Scanias where based at Reading quarry and there also was three of them reg nos LNN 801/802/803K.
