The Hoveringham pit at Tillingham in Essex (mentioned earlier) is still there and is now owned by Robert Dewick who has a small sand/gravel & plant hire company. The pit entrance still has its original iron gates with the ‘HOVERINGHAM’ name still welded in place!!

Mate, that would be fantastic ! I know for a fact at an old Tarmac quarry at Matlock, there was plenty of old Seddon Atkinson cabs and an old Foden cab that belonged to Mammoth Transport / Tarmac up til recently. They were all scooped up and binned when the area was cleared to make way for a Sainsbury’s supermarket. Shame I didn’t get any pics !
The foden 8 legger worked in Beeston Cheshire quarry. Then it was converted to a big wrecker and lived the other side of the railway bridge about 100 yards from the quarry gates. It was bought about 5 / 6 years ago and was totally rebuilt including major renovation to an original Hoveringham body, overhaul of the two stroke engine and 12 speed gearbox.
I was working at Hoveringham Gravels when the wrecker was built. Here’s a few photos to be going on with. The blue and red pictures is the wrecker in it’s present form, for sale on ebay just before christmas. The last I heard it hadn’t reached it’s reserve price. Enjoy!
littlerichard,
I was interested to see your post about a Hoveringham pit at Wyboston as I didnt know Hoveringham were in there.
Can you remember exactly where it was ?
I remember the pit at Brampton and I also remember seeing a couple of Reiver six wheeler tippers parked up in St Neots, back when you could park a truck in a street without complaints !, this would all have been mid to late 70s.
Probably not long before Hoveringham were taken over.
Cheers
Mark
Is the blue and red wrecker the same one as the one in traditional hoveringham colours?..if not the blue and red colour scheme is identical to the one used by TW GLOVER of ravenstone leicestershire a company started by the late Trevor Glover a friend of my late father…he ran a lot of foden eight wheel tippers until the late 80 s I think Wayne Robinson
Yes wayne the very same one, take a close look at the hydraulic system on both pictures. The boom was manufactured at invictor bridge engineering.
Their company was based in hoveringhams yard.
Hi Nigel, long time no see!
Thgere’s been a few threads on Hoveringham in here as you’re no doubt aware. I’ve still got some of Dad’s memorabilia including his long sevice certificates and some pics if you’re interested.

Nigel’s married to my cousin BTW, small world innit?

I remember the quarry at Wyboston very well, it was situated in the apex between the St Neots/Eaton Socon bypass and the A1. Standing there now is a motel and i believe on the quarry itself a golf driving range and watersport area. The entrance to the quarry can still be seen today, as you join the A1 from Eaton Socon going south the old entrance is on the left at about the end of the slip road joining the A1. I believe along the line of trees/hedge is the old entrance.
Thanks for that littlerichard,
I never knew there was a pit there.
It makes alot of sense as there is a lake there and the area is now part of the Wyboston Lakes, Conference Centre which as you say has a motel and golf course.
Readymix still have a batching plant on part of the site, which ironically Ive taken sand into.
Small world sometimes.
Do you remember the pit at Brampton?
Does anyone remember Outland Head quarry just above Bradwell, Derbyshire ?
A smallish limestone quarry, it was 1/2 a mile up a hill outside of Bradwell, and when it was running, everytime they blasted for stone, a huge cloud of dust always blew over the village !
The residents became sick and tired of it and I believe they petitioned for it’s closure. This duly followed soon after Tarmac bought Hoveringham and duly shut it down.
It was the venue of Truck magazine’s annual Tip In for several years in the late 80s as there was still plenty of rough ■■■■■■■■ and chatter heaped up.
One other thing to mention was the tarmac plant was situated away from the quarry on a level lower and there were two steep climbs away from the bins to the weighbridge which was sited at the top of the public road which ran next to the quarry. I remember seeing the w/bridge in the mid 80s and thinking it looked like one of those public w/bridges that the ministry are so fond of.
Here is a photo of the wrecker just after hoveringham were taken over by the big t…c group. This one is for you bonky.

Amazing mate !
Can I ask what year was the transformation completed ?
Judging by the paint job, it was after '86 as all new wagons had the full Tarmac livery after that date.
None of the old 'Tarmac Roadstone Northern / Holdings Limited and the sides of the bodies had ROADSTONE planted on them instead of the old seven Ts and Tarmac logo.
Just one more to keep you all interested.
Hoveringham was taken over by tarmac in march 1984.I am not sure when it was painted, but have many fond memories of it as i was time served
at hoveringham.I was a mobile plant fitter and traveled to many of the quarries mentioned.I remember brampton having a special kind of sand, dont
quite know how to pronounce it but sounded like silica, and is used for making glass.
This must be the other wrecker you all talk about, perhaps someone out there can tell me.

Another lovely pic, mate !
I can see some rather tasty looking S80s parked up over in the right hand corner. Were these laid up as scrappers ? Is this pic taken at the same location ? You can see an old S80 on the left.
Also, do you have any other Tarmac / Hoveringham related pics ?
