Hoveringham gravels

Reiver pictured near Outland Head quarry, Bradwell Derbyshire.

hello every-one, my name is kevin smith. I have just been looking through this site and felt I had to join as my dad was fred smith who replaced sandy as the low-loader driver at hoveringham. unfortunatly my dad passed away february 26th 2013 but his happiest times were working for hoveringham.
I can remember going out with him in the scammell, f88 and f12 low loaders as well as the flat bed that nigel has put the picture up of and the skip lorries. He was on the gravel side driving tippers before moving to the plant side but I cannot remember this. Names that come back into my memory (as I was between the ages of 8 and 15 when I used to go with him), were reg something but everybody knew him as blue as he took over driving the flat-bed from dad when dad moved to the low-loader and mick the welder because in the mornings, before we would go out we had a cup of tea sat down with him and bill smith (no relation) who was dads drivers mate on the low-loader, he always smoked a pipe and had a knife in his pocket to peel his apple with.
I do have lots more stories to tell and I am sure now on this site more names will come back to me when talking to you all.

kevin smith

Would love to know what the reg number of this one was…

Hi.
The photos of the gang brought back some memories,i drove for mammoth tankers, great bloke in charge, forgive me but i can never remember his name, good cricketer, and always put the drivers first, trevor Mottishead was traffic man, with all the tankers all over england, when you rang him, your next load was ready,i could work for both of those men again, proper. Drivers Windle,(Molly) P.Kay (Trail Boss) “Cuddly”. Gilly and
Urko !! Tony Brough, also a chap who went in the office, went eventualy to Sand Hills, and sadly Died a while back. And another chap who lived up near Hebbs the Volvo garage.(Wessington/Alfreton) His wife was scared stiff by a mouse at their new bungalow. Joe Roache etc. If i have forgotten your names, its not deliberate, more old age !
Oh,and me… Borrawash Flyer Ted. Great job, great blokes,“If it fits up the pipe,we can BLOW IT !” Question,is Urko STILL !!! driving?,his original licence must have beenm for a Roman Chariot.

PS. Drove with bob king and his brother on Phillips Wirksworth… Now that WAS !! THE JOB. Dennis Phillips, truly a great man, never to be forgotten, lots of stories there, from me and dozens more

Hulltramper, just thought you might like to know Tony Brough (ex mammoth transport/hoveringham) is alive & well living in Wirksworth. His youngest son has just left my house. We were at school together & now drive for the same firm.

Hi Jason.
Thanks for the info, was it Craig ?,worked with Tony and Barry at Matlock transport as well, also "Scratch.D’Art.Kevin Peddly(LOCK YOUR WOMEN UP!!!).Last i heard about Craig was when he went into the dealers about his crap new R-Rover,some innocent salesman met him coming into the showroom and asked him could he help him Craig is supposed to have said “Not unless you own the Bleeep place”
Is D’Art aka Gaily still with us?
Back to the names at Mammoth,i think the boss was Malcom? .good man, very fair and what a mistaka to maka… MAD MONK,.enough said LOL.
Will keep an eye out on this p[ost, please remember me to all the Brug-H’s,if you don’ mind, stay well, stay lucky.
hulltramper aka borrawash flyer/hedgebumper.
PS Ask tony if he remembers,he was driving the Mammoth Foden tanker Reg*** 999,and came around the corner where a car had broken down and no room to pass,he knew i was coming hard behind him,in an 8 legger leyland with “Christ” brakes,he said he saw me appear first in one mirror then in the other a couple of times and while waiting for the bang, sucked on his pipe so hard he used 2 lb of baccy,. lucky i managed to kill the speed. Happy days ? YOU BET !

Yes it was Craig that was round here although that sounds more like Kevin at R Rover dealer, will check with Craig though.john(dart)gaily,Tony & few other ex drivers get in the wheatsheaf in Wirksworth early doors for a pint or two! Mad monk still alive & kicking.Other names that might ring a few bells,Brian"cuddly"Freeman,Malc Travis,Rod Gill,Joe Roach.Did you know Peter Spencer? He drove for Derbyshire Stone/Tarmac on the tanks,he is my uncle.

Hi.
Where are you going to be up at this time !!! ?,somewhere nice i hope,“Scottish Lakes tour” with lorry LOL. Is your dad,“Spenner”,at one time running with “Sparrow” nights out of Dene, into the “Elephants Feet”,(Bitumen Blocks Cawder ?).I remember him well. While they were running in and out of Dene, some Ner’ do wells, stole two wagons, must have waited for them to load and go.
Remember all those names, love to come over to the Sheaf one night, used to park my first Mammoth tank there,(Lived on the meadows) a Guy 6 legger, when i got upgraded to an 8 leg/AEC,left it down at Dene, when i told the landlord i was pulling out,he said"Thank god for that,i was going to ask you to leave anyway, when you started up in the morning and built your air up ,you couldn’t BREATH in our bedroom for smoke".Great pub, great guy.
It will have to be mid Jan 14’ ,NO! NOT helping the police locate proceeds of crime,or operation Yew Tree !!. Take care of yourself, will watch this thread,as you don’t know who else will “Still be with us” LOL

Hi Jason.
Just re-read your post, sorry, missed the bit about “Spenner” being your , UNCLE. Used to holiday at Shell Island, near Barmouth, seen him as brown as a…“Curly haired person”,asked where he’d been, and went myself , Mick Smith,(Wag Tail) came a couple of times ,and Inch came one year.
Keep the shiny side up and the dirty side down…we’re Gone.

Hi Jason and Hov. men.
1/, Jason knew that lot,and a chap called ■■■■ something,(AS IN RICHARD!!),Cuddly, ■■■■ and myself went into the Lamp Lighter pub Northampton one night,i wanted to be up and away at sparrows,so went to buy the first round as 3 pints would be enough,Cuddly said quietly, let ■■■■ buy the first round,i explained why,he said let ■■■■ buy it,you not been out with him before, look and learn ■■■■ ordered 3 pints, and as i picked my pint up,■■■■ swallowed his and had ordered another, super bloke, but he could get it down him.

2/ Other Hoveringham lads. Any one knew Ron Beers ? Don’t know him to well, but we used to be in a caravan club together and i think he was a Fitter/Driver at Hoveringham itself. If you want to be remembered to him,i have a mate,(Yes ONE).John Birch. International Logistics.aka Fergie, running a six wheel Scania tipper on the Tarmac scheme, based near Ashbourne. If you say Hello on here,i can pass it on to Fergie. No,no need to tell me,i know Fergie IS !! a Balm Pot.
Borrowash/hulltramper aka… Call me what you want,as long as it’s not late for my dinner!. :unamused:

Rod Gill lives on my road and Neville Nightingale is close by as well. Know a lot of the names mentioned (Birchy, ‘King Bob’ etc) but I am an ex Ballidon man myself…

Pete.

Hi Windrush.
Ballidon man ?= LOADS A MONEY !!!
Nev Nightingal,i am sure when i was with Tarmac tankers at Cawder,i took an old 6 leg Albion tanker over from Nev when he moved up one,(Been on nights,2x Bradford 1 was from Ashley Dale ? an old atki artic tank),i think David Seals was the other chap. I will work day and night, but not nights, they did not have a spare tripper when i wanted to bale out,so i got the Albion, nice tidy motor,Derbyshire Stone colours,Blue and White,BIG tank with Derbyshire \Stone in huge letters on it…OOOPS. Coming home as you do,well out of time, came up the M5,they were making it three lanes, there is me hands and heels going well for home.(The Ranch at w/worth).Next day does a few loads,Geof Mee,or Ken Wardale, two more good men asked, where did you stop last night,me,“Monmouth”. Funny that they said,“We saw a tanker the spitting image of yours, and your twin brother driving it on the news last night in the road works on the M5”. AS SEEN ON POLICE 5,is for wimps, get yourselves on the News !!
Tell Ferglet,i was sat here tonight, far from home, drinking out of the mug he bought, with the inscription on.
It’s difficult to soar like an EAGLE,when you’re surrounded by TURKEYS !!.
Every time he *****D up,i would tell him this,he saw the mug and got his own back, like Ferg a lot, shame he is an only twin.
Do you live in,“Tanker Row” Matlock with all the other sinners.Ted Whittaker…There was a man and a half, and last but not least,do you know Halfa. “Just put another halfa ton on”. Used to get a load to Finningly when the airshow was on,and sit on top of the silo, watched it all for free. Happy Days.
Ted-Borrowash

Not quite right lad, but along the same lines! Never had my own truck, wouldn’t know what to do with all the money, but I drove tipper’s for Tilcon at Ballidon. Then I went driving for the chap who was mates with Alan Docksey, I took over the six wheeler that his lad had driven before he headed Stateside (now back driving in Ashbourne) so you and Ferg were close but no cigar! He is right about me being a nice chap though…

Pete.
