Hire UK workers to drive lorries, minister tells firms

bbc.co.uk/news/uk-58364308

My new favorite MP.

I just hope the RHA doesnt make them do a u-turn and open the floodgates to foreign truckers who will work for like £5p/h.

Mr Kwarteng said the HGV drivers would not be eligible for a skilled worker visa - which would allow overseas workers to come to the UK - or be added to the Shortage Occupation List.

The fact that Truck drivers are going on strike over pay when there is a shortage of HGV drivers kinda says it all.

This is what Labour had to say
Seema Malhotra, Labour’s shadow minister for business and consumers

“Ministers must listen to businesses and unions who are calling for them to show leadership and put in place short-term solutions to deal with this acute crisis. But they must also end their chronic dismissal of these concerns, having accused the industry of ‘crying wolf’ over driver shortages, and take action to deliver on the promise of post-Brexit Britain.”

So Labour is all in favour of short term solutions which will mean opening the floodgates to foreign HGV drivers

Genuinely still don’t believe that temporary visas will be the magic fix all that some seem to think it will be. For instance I wouldn’t be willing to spend six months or so driving in Poland say, unless it was hugely lucrative colored to UK. The same is now true in reverse, their money isn’t far off ours. But also now they’d be taxed on it instead of hiding behind a Ltd Co to increase their money jn the bank…

Funny how nobody with their head screwed on is saying, “Business must listen to the HGV drivers to deal with this acute crisis”

if the message gets thru to johny foreigner that we dont want their sort thatll be all for the good. for a long time too many young lads in particular couldnt get a job after leaving school, now theyll get a chance

Best news I have heard all year, well done that man.
And yet Labour who are supposed to represent the working man advocate the return of cheap foreign workforce■■? They really are a dead party!

Calm down toryboys, the day the tories do something for hgv drivers will be the first. Believe you me, they will have you working for 2.50 an hour if they could - immigration to the UK hasnt fallen one jot - the tories have opened the doors to south east asia and India. The tories were furiously against minimum wage remember.

And Labour didnt say they would open the doors to EE drivers at all - read it again.

It’s not just the Labour party, it’s the unions as well.

Labour don’t seem to want the working mans vote any more. But who’s vote are they chasing?

No, theres still massive migration - its just Indians and south east asians now instead of EEs. The moneys not good enough for the EEs, Indians will work for even less.

At least Labour talk about unions tho - the tories would be happy to wipe every union off the face of the earth and let the bosses pay two bob an hour if they could.

Cheap labour is not confined to driving my son in law has said the same about eastern europeans gas fitting and plumbers

The minimum wage has held back earnings. Why, as a boss, would you pay more than NMW when the Government top it up with working tax credits etc and you also HAD an endless supply of cheap foreign labour to step in when the indigenous population demand more? That particular labour policy is now a busted flush thanks to Brexit and wages are climbing accordingly.
I agree with you on the Asian immigrant situation which they will try to bring in under the radar though, there’s already 20,000 Afghans en-route, some of them will train up for HGV drivers.

Theres certainly an argument that bosses pay minimum wage and stay there but saying min wage “held back” wages is over-reaching. Would bosses really have put wages up as fast as minimum wage goes up? Remember bosses were paying 50pence an hour back in the mid-90s. The tories might only put 50 pence on the min wage once a decade - but thats more than most bosses would.

They’re going for the metropolitan middle classes, minorities and champagne socialist votes, but don’t seem to realise that by doing so they’re alienating their core voter base which was the working classes.

The market is now deciding what wages should be now though. Bosses of the big supermarket and logistics concerns realise that the last 20yrs of government subsidised low wages and cheap imported labour to prop it up is coming to an end. The scare headlines of threats of empty shelves and Christmas shortages are a last desperate attempt to try and force government to continue that con. So far government isn’t backing down (they’ve got one eye on the working classes in the Red Wall constituencies where this message is going down well) but remember these big supermarkets are big political party donaters too so watch this space……. And enjoy those wage rises while they’re here

forget EE workers now. who cares how much people are making in Poland or Romania.
We are not in the free movement Euro anymore.
If EE workers won’t come there is millions of Indians or philipenos that will jump in there shoes.
It’s not about EE workers anymore. it is about the government not granting 20k truck driver visas to anyone from any country which they can do now.
I can’t see the government giving out 20k or 30k none skilled visas for truck drivers myself like but could be proved wrong.
Then there is warehouse staff aswell and the whole logistics chain.
I can’t see the government folding and handing out 100k visa for non skilled jobs it would be a free for all and I can’t see it happening.

Lord Sainsbury is the UK’s biggest political donor overall, handing out some £40m. In 2016, he gave £2m each to Labour and the Liberal Democrats ahead of the EU referendum. In 2019 the Lib Dems’ got £8 million.

Tesco leans more to the left than the right.

Is there anything that politicians have done recently that have made our lives better?

We all know the answer to that, so there is little prospect of them making a decision about anything that will be any good to anyone, apart from themselves, their families and friends, so I think we can forget about Govt. intervention.

Flavour of party matters not, they are like all new cars, the same.

Sainsbury’s and Argos appear very left wing. The RDC at Heywood celebrates every single “inclusion day” imaginable.

Nothing wrong with that of course except… It’s all for show.

Really hope your right mate else the race to the bottom will start again, and the bar will never lower than before.

Yeah, they “appear” left wing but their sole purpose is to maximise profits from whatever source, remember that. The rest is just waffle to fit with the current narrative
