I did, some weeks ago, take the time to peruse the HATO forum and, TBH, it was quite mundane.
Obviously TN is better entertainment.
Now if we could just get the new Transport Minister toā¦

It can be at times when nothing is happening, if itās all about traffic management matters, itās going to be boring to the lay person. Just like on here, there are times when it is all wagonny type stuff that bores us
Motorway first opened 1960 ish, 2004 H.A. started patroling them we survived a hell of long time without them . Now they are spying on everyone and grassing us up to police , i think most were bullied at school or failed police exams Found out due to TV programs about them the females get turned on by stopping the traffic on a motorway ,But on the bright side as one road police officer said and we thought was funny it saves the police from running into a live lane risking their life to remove an object from the carriage way
Thats progress for you .

Hello eurodaily, welcome to the debate
Overtime things change new things come along. Itās natural to be wary of something new / the unknown.
Personally Iām not a spy (didnāt join MI5 / 6) Iām not a grass either, if I see something which I feel the Police need to be aware of I will inform them, after all the HA tagline is: āSafe Roads Reliable Journeys, Informed Travellersā
Which females get turned on by stopping the traffic BTTW?
And Idonāt feel

Is a honest accurate quote of a PC.
The job we do is very mundane on a day to day basis interspersed with more interesting moments. Sadly the job usually thrives on others distress.
Crossing the motorway is one of the scariest things I have ever done, however I only do it if necessary, same as I only do lane 1 closures and rolling road blocks if necessary.
We all have a job to do ours is about keeping the network moving, once people understand that and that we are not āfailed, wannabe coppersā things might become easier for all of us.
Iād like to thank all the drivers that move over for us when weāre on the H/S and help withj the RRBās!!!
Iād also like to thank the idiotic drivers that think itās hilarious by swerving towards us and blowing their horns when weāre on the hard shoulder and laughing.
Also if we have a closure on and itās due to a fatal or serious injury RTC thanks to the select few drivers who shout all manner of abuse at us, Iām sure that the family would be happy to hear you shouting āANCHORā at the poor soul that is stuck in his upturned car with his dead kids in the back.
I must say I think with over 2000 traffic related incidents only in England per day.
The traffic officer service is a very worthwhile cause. I was working on the motorways long before this service was introduced and it really was no surprise that Englandās trunk routes and motorways where in the mess that they where. When the local councils handed back ownership to the government some 15 or so years ago the HA relied on contractors to maintain the roads and the police to patrol and welfare broken down and lane stranded motorist. This was in effect the tail wagging the dog and costing tax payers loads of money. Now with the HA operating a service 24/7 road problems are becoming evident to them, allowing them to focus more into trouble spots!
In my opinion the DFT still has a long way to go into making the roads flow more efficient, however the TO service has played its own part in making sure the major routes are more safer by attending coordinating and clearing incidents, reporting road defects and getting them repaired more quickly. Traffic offences were mentioned in another post! Yes they do get reported to the police but only if they are serious enough! Misdemeanour offences such as speeding, lane hogging, people jumping red lights at junctions, people stopping on the hard shoulder illegally and drivers using their mobile phone (I could go on here for days!) Donāt go undetected but they do not get reported by highways to the police for prosecution. Our jobs is the bigger picture big disruption to the traffic flow/ motorway network is what traffic officers are trying to avoid so you truckies and everyone else can quite happily drive down the road singing your favourite tunes on the radio.

I do not experience this sort of behaviour where I work. However I can not stress enough how dangerous this is to road workers and members of the public and will be reported to the feds by most traffic officers!
PLEASE DO NOT DO IT!
Any Scottish, welsh or Irish drivers viewing this. Whatās your take on traffic officers? Would you like to see your governments running a uniform motorway patrol? Or do to feel police patrols are enough?

Isnāt that serious enough. This type of behaviour by drivers is just the sort of serious misdemeanour that should be reported.
If the above is not serious would you mind telling us what is?

I personally donāt bother with phones, speeding unless itās extremely excessive or aything else youāve mentioned.
I have reported a drink driver ( she was drinking a can of carling behind the wheel) and a abnormal load on which the trailer had a weave from the h/s to lane 2. Other than that I leave criminality to the BIB
Iām the same, unless theyāre really kicking the arse out of it, I wonāt report it to an already overstretched police service. For me to report it, it would have to be a really serious and imminent threat to life.
So driving while using a hand held phone is not in your words
" A serious and imminent threat to life"
A recent study reached the conclusion that driving while distracted ( mobile phone use) was far worse than driving while over the drink driving limit.
So the carling drinker may have been safer than the mobile phone user.

Sadly yes, although she was drinking she still was consentrating on the road where as somone on the phone is only half looking at the road - well thatās my opinion anyway.

If you feel that this is so serious that it warrants reporting to the BiB, doyou report every driver you see using a mobile phone to the police?
Can you provide a link to the report you referenced above please?

This sort of stuff will get you a finger wagging from a HA patrol but we are instructed from our employer not to report.
If a drivers affecting traffic flow in more than 1 lane over a long Period of time or losing their load, patrols will take action. The rest is for the police to act on not us! To rub salt into the wound very few police forces actively patrol the motorway now so most driving offences go unpunished. The HATOs donāt have any control over that if you donāt agree with that you will have to write to your local MP
The reports were made by The transport research Laboratory and The university of Utah.
Recent report on bbc from the RAC foundation concerning texting

Unfortunately my friend it is all about remits and resources.
Itās not a Highways Traffic Officerās remit to report this type of offence
and if it was the chances are the feds would not have the resources to act.
If they were to attend unless the driver in still engaged in their actions its our word against theirs. It turns out to be a pointless excercise.
As Iāve already stated, as far as some police forces are concerned we are just another member of the public and will take action as and when they see fit. They already have enough on their hands with the ever dwindling RPU patrols and wouldnāt take too kindly to us always ācarrying talesā for want of a better expression. When we need them for a serious offence, weāll get, āitās only the HATOās over exaggeratingā and we will not get a patrol attend.
