Suppose it depends on which force area you operate in.
I know my old force the chief constable has stopped motorway patrols
and is just reactive to the motorway. They rely heavily on HA patrols
sorting things out for them its not right!..

Iâm quite lucky, I work in a North West county with lots of water and hills!! The RPU guys are pretty good and we get on well with most of them so that makes the job a bit easier
them herberts in them flash motors are the best thing thats ever happened to us lads who fiddle, at night you dont see hardly any police cars so we are safe to do what we want. 2 questions why do they stare at u when they overtake, and why the â â â â do they need 35k plus motors why carnt they have vans plenty good enough for them,

We only look at you when we overtake if the wagon has been weaving over the road, itâs just to make sure you havenât dozed off

The reports were made by The transport research Laboratory and The university of Utah.Recent report on bbc from the RAC foundation concerning texting
And Iâll ask again just in case you missed it. Do you report every driver you see using a mobile phone whilst driving?

Have a read of the full thread andyouâll find the answer.
BTW hi
The Highway Man:
As Iâve already stated, as far as some police forces are concerned we are just another member of the public and will take action as and when they see fit. They already have enough on their hands with the ever dwindling RPU patrols and wouldnât take too kindly to us always âcarrying talesâ for want of a better expression. When we need them for a serious offence, weâll get, âitâs only the HATOâs over exaggeratingâ and we will not get a patrol attend.
so sort of the boy who cried wolf scenario in a funny kind of way (not in the way as you making things up, if that makes sense
? Or maybe notâ â ?

VOSA still operate at night and are becoming more and more pro active HATOs dont work in suffolk (only on f/stow stack) the police do! dont say you where not warned when you pick up a prohabition and points for running bent.
2 why do they stare at u when they overtake,
Maybe your paranoid because you know your on the fiddle or looking tried from driving long long hours. Maybe you look ugly i dont know the answer to that one
3 why do we have 35k motors and not vans?
Because when you have to pull up to three and a half ton of vehicle with no wheels to clear the road you need something that has a bit of pull. Transit vans could not pull you out of bed also our vehicles have to perform their duties in all weathers and difficult road conditions (ie snow)
They also carry a heavy pay load. we also depend on them protecting us roadside should someone deside to drive tried and plough into us!
Hope this has shed some light on your questions.
ps Because they are crown vehicles they do not pay 35k for them much much less

word of warning mate peolple from VOSA are members of this forum and saying things like that on here is not exactly bright. Should VOSA pick up on this and want to look into it further they could in theory. And they could techincally track you down by just posting on this forum.
Theyâll patrol day or night rain or shine if they have reason to suspect any foul play which from the sounds of it your not playing ball.
Do Hato officers have any advanced driver training and if so is thier driving checked on a regular basis.
My point being I have seen some far from safe overtaking by Hato officers in the past. And no, there was no incident further down the road.
Or is it the case Hato officers have the same basic training as a normal police officer

Yes TOs go through and are assessed on a defensive driving course they
Are also subjected to a vigorous 4x4 off road all weather course designed
by land rover. Driving standard is not checked regularly.

I canât comment on this one, their could be a number of reasons for this type of driving behaviour. They should still stick to the rules of the road unless the road is closed.
The driver training is different to that of the police that said a lot of hatos are ex police fire or ambulance and will have experience previous of response driving but should stay Inline with HA guidelines.
I raised the issue of driving standards a little while ago because i was shocked at the low level of professionalism and driving standard some of my colleagues showed behind the wheel.I put forward getting all IAM (Inst. of Advanced Motorists), qualification,to which is the level our current training takes us too, more or less. This was turned down by our training people !!
Some are not the best, but the same can be same for some truck drivers

Iâve taught a couple as an IAM Senior observer - they told me that their time with me was paid for as well - it was done in their own private cars though.

Greg:

Not long enough
Not all were done by police, some was training company, who employed ex police. As to whether they were police driver trainers or just ex motorway/RPU
My driving course was eight days with Greater Manchester Police driving school.
Mine was 2 weeks with a Royal Military Police driving instructor.
