I thought the posting of this topic was a good idea as it highlighted a few safety problems that truckers may face and gave truckers an inside view into those that are sent to help.
We also have posts from agency people on this site giving us the opportunity to have an insight from the other side of the table - all good stuff IMO

Now that we’ve been doing the job for a while, I think you’ll find that we normally match the speed of the vehicles in lane 1, i.e. the heavies. That way we’re not holding you lads/lasses up and we can still respond to incidents as and when they arise.
that’s one thing that puzzles me, why call them “heavies” there’s plenty of names already , Trucks, Lorries, Wagons etc no need to make up another one 
Generally I think the HATO’s do a good job, Police forces have cut resources back so it needs someone out there able to respond quickly, and you always know where to find one - parked in the car park of the nearest services
As with any job or group of people, you’ll always get one who’s a complete prat and gives all the others a bad name!

Whats a sad individual. anywho, As has been said so many times already, there a few bad eggs in the TO service but on the whole, we have a lot of good guys and gals. Lets be honest, were not plastic Police and I do hate that phrase.
I love to educate poeple about who we are, what we do and why we do things. But when I pass a car or truck weaving around on the H/S and I get alongside and see they are on a phone, id love to be able to somehow get them a ticket. Lets be honest they deserve it. Big fine, points and a great big hike in insurance. And anyone who disagrees, lets see how you would react if your wife/kids/parents in a car get rammed by a guy on the phone and kills them. The rest of your life devastated because of this.
Also, a heck of a lot of our guys have left and HAVE joined the Police so that ends that one and anyone else who stays like myself, just enjoys helping people.

Nope, truth doesnt hurt. Its an untrue phrase used for us, thats why I dont like it. I dont claim to be a cop, I dont prounce around like I am one either. I know exactly what I look like driving around and I’m proud of the job I do. Bullied at school, I’ll let you make your mind up, I am 6 foot 2 now and was the biggest in my class , I played rugby then and now and go to the gym so no I wasnt bullied but thanks for the concern. I do want to help decent law abiding citizens that pay taxes, drive safely and have consideration for others. I bet you dont fit any of the above and i would put money on you got a bollocking for smoking in your cab too. If your gonna be an idiot and get caught, you only have yourself to blame. Lucky for me, I have a bike licence and my LGV licence and drove before I became a TO so I understand fully what the majority of truckers have to put up with and respect the majority of truckers views, but not yours.

Well, after all the comments and insults I still cannot see what purpose HATSO’s serve that would not be better served by police patrols.
As far as I am concerned they have been implemented soley to cut costs by reducing the number of “proper” police patrols.
Only had one actual contact with them, and I disagreed with their judgment, but they went on their way happpily.
