It is very rare ,in my area,to implement rolling road blocks for TM crews to layout roadworks. We only do blocks for ISU crews to implement lane one closures for tyre changes because they are usually in a transit or 7 1/2 t that do not have crash cushions like the roadwork’s TM trucks do.
So blocks are usually put in for safety of our crews doing emergency traffic management, not roadworks crews. The ‘divs’ that run across 3 lanes of m/way with a sign over their head are not HATOs.
read the post properly one of your mates said the safety of the cone droppers is paramount thats where the statement come from
The crew laying the cones!! It doesn’t say wether it is a HATO crew,ISU crew or TM crew.

You have never mentioned yellow lorrys,so im going to leave this topic now because ‘dicks’ like us obviously don’t know what we are talking about

Your attitude towards other road users is absolutely appalling regardless of who is on any road your should respect the space they require or are you just that ignorant you cant help yourself? You sound like the type of person that will pull up to a red light and lose the plot just because you have to wait for a few mins. I would not put you in charge of a kids Tonka truck let alone behind the wheel of a real HGV. It sounds like its not just Hatos you hate, its everything you hate!

your tags really grown up as well i see dead people yes you will all depends on how many crashes you cause hatos in one word incompetent
i wasn’t too keen on hato at first, but now it seems most road users are used too them, the problems, with people thinking they were police cars has eased.
on the whole, most seem too do a good job, in a profesional manner, and if they save 1 life, by coning a lane off, then thats fine by me, no matter how much time it costs me. if my mrs, or any family member, were unlucky enough, too end up stranded on the hard shoulder, i’d be glad of hato’s presence, behind them.
my only 1 bugbear, is the ones that seem too cruise up and down the motorway network, at 50mph, any reason■■?
like any industry, more good than bad, but people always remember the bad.

I got told by a HATO that I was teaching advanced driver training to, that 50 is a speed whereby they have time to scan the whole road for debris etc - any faster and things can get missed and any slower would be considered as an unsafe speed for a motorway.
Now that we’ve been doing the job for a while, I think you’ll find that we normally match the speed of the vehicles in lane 1, i.e. the heavies. That way we’re not holding you lads/lasses up and we can still respond to incidents as and when they arise.
I’ve got no issues with the HATO guys but I’m really perplexed with one thing that they do.
What exactly are they looking for when they stand at the rear of their vehicle looking at the oncoming traffic?
Genuine question by the way.

We are observing the traffic in case an errant driver strays onto the hard shoulder where we are stopped, that way we can shout a warning to our colleagues to jump out of the way. Just like meerkats watching for danger
Fair do’s.
It saved the life of the crew M1 J22 area about a year ago.The first officer shouted a warning to the second who dived down the embankment as a hgv ploughed into the broken down car.
And it is alos handy for any Eddie spotters

ta, rog and highwayman.
trouble is, the wallies who are flying down the outside lane, glance and see the hato car, think its the feds, and anchor on, too get back down too 69.9mph.
can cause a knock on effect, and lead too bunching.
but, thats not hato’s fault.

I only have 1 experience of a HATO crew, and it was a good one. I don’t recall exactly when it was, but I was driving round the M25 about a mile or so before J29 clockwise and there was a lot of smoke coming from the o/s/f wheel. I initially pulled onto the shoulder, but felt in danger so drove up to the junction slip road, and pulled over to the side.
About 5 mins later a HATO crew pulled up (I was away from the vehicle), and a pleasant chap asked me politely what the problem was. I said about all the smoke, he asked it it was still driveable, so I said yes but wouldn’t want to go far for fear of the wheel collapsing or something! He said that he would like me to drive down to the r/a then through a farm gate off just before the first exit proper so the lance wouldn’t have to be closed. I agreed, and limped down there with the HATO on my tail. He thanked me then for pulling off the motorway, and said they’d check on me in a while. I thought fair enough but didn’t expect to see them again. An hour or so later, he and his oppo turned up to check on me, and the lady offered me a bottle of water which I thought was great.
I looked at their website when they started up, but the salary is too low for my situation. I wouldn’t look at it as a plastic copper role, rather a road safety role without being in the police. Freeing up police time is what its all about isn’t it?
