HGV Medical

I recommend these guys - they were quick, reliable and very professional. They cover Manchester and the North West.

Best bit is they offer same day appointments if you really need.

45 is just 2 weeks off for me, and the forms arrived for me a fortnight ago. How did I get this old?

I’m not currently using my HGV licence, so pressure is off (I think).

Does anyone know what happens if I haven’t renewed it by my birthday? Presumably I can still drive non-HGV stuff, but does that include me being able to carry on towing a 3.5 tonne trailer?

Also, if I left it a while, is it still just a case of filling in the same forms or would there be any extra requirement or cost because I let it lapse? Or anything stupid like having to take an HGV test again?

I’m thinking that I might as well keep the cash in my pocket till I need it if it is still just the same requirement later on down the line.

You can suspend doing your LGV medical for as long as you like and all that is required to get the categories back is to pass that medical at any time in the future … age 80 if you like

Not having a current LGV medical means that nothing in the C and D categories will be valid but it will not affect any other categories

NOTE - Pre 1997 C1 C1+E D1 and D1+E are not affected if the medical is not valid and the driver is aged under 70

If you do not renew it and then return to commercial LGV driving please do not forget the DCPC requirements

i think i,d just pay the £56 and get it done even if i wasnt using it at the moment

I probably will do to be fair, just good to know that I don’t have to rush to do it in the next couple of weeks.

The driver’s cpc is something that is putting me off a bit though - it’s a fair commitment for something that I don’t really need at the minute.

Can you do it early? Say at age 43, Or will they expect you to do it again at 45?

I have not seen or heard of any rules that prevent you doing that but why would you want to ?

A couple of reasons.
Firstly, My brother left his a bit late and by the time DVLA had sorted things out he was technically driving without a licence.
Secondly, I’m having an MOT done soon, Blood pressure, Eye test, and blood test because of a dodgy mushroom incident, So i might as well get the lot done.

I,m 99% certain theres a part on the form which says the medical must be carried out a maximum of 6months before the due date (ie your 45th birthday)

Hi Rog

I agree with what you are saying but if the op has a C+E the 107 restriction is lifted on the C1+E. If his medical expires I was under the impression the 107 restriction kicks back in on the C1+E.

That is why it is not removed on passing your C+E.

Spot on

It works the same if the driver has D - the D1 and D1+E remains with the 101 code

Just my bit since I just did my medical on the 22nd of july ,my birthday was the 23rd ,so a bit tight  ,There is no more urine sample,i also renewed my license and surprisingly it arrived today the 1st of august,so a 10 day turn around ,not bad for Swansea even if I do say so myself…Before doing the medical I go to an optician and have my eyes checked properly ,I really don’t want to spend all that money on a medical to fail on the eyetest…I did send all the forms including options report on guaranteed next day delivery and to be signed for And on the DVLA website you can still drive as long as you haven’t failed the medical or there is any there reason you can’t drive .Hope that helps someone

My advice is to get it done as early as you can. If your BP is high, or you need new specs, you then have time to get it sorted.

As I will be 45 in July I will need to have a medical, do the DVLA send me the forms that I need for the doctor or do I have to inform the DVLA? Also has anyone had experience of drivermedical.com who advertise that they do medicals for £52 inc vat in a town near you, which is a lot cheaper than the £132 my doctor charges. Thanks

I had to have my medical last year as I turned 45, the DVLA sent the forms through the post to my address about 2 months before my licence was up for renewal. The questionaire was alot more detailed than when I first had one 20yrs ago when taking my test.

Paul

They sent the forms to me a couple of months before my 45th too - unfortunately i didn’t renew it then, now 2 years later it’s taking them FOREVER to get my licence back to me. I used a 3rd party doctor - but I would recommend getting your doc to check your blood pressure first though (that’s free - just tell them your a bit concerned) because if your BP is too high; ie your lower figure is over 100, then DVLA will write to your GP for your last 3 recent readings anyway. That’s what’s holding mine up - driving to the quack put my BP up to 148/105 - but the three at my GP have been about 140/85 :frowning:
