Hereford hauliers

Hi Bob,sorry mate, just seen your reply and photo. That looks as though it was taken early 80s,I do remember a particularly bad winter, maybe 79/80 when there was hardly owt up our end,Yorkshire, and you had a dollop in the south-west.No Ross trunkers could get to Maltby,so an attempt was made to do it from our end with some success.
Did you know any of the MFS drivers? Ray Jenkins was on nights regular at Ross, organising the loads and he went to the new depot at Chepstow. Some other names will come to me.
Do you have any more photos? And do you remember a firm called Man of Ross, carried a lot of soft fruit in the season, are they still going?

Chris.

Dave the Renegade:

New Scania wagon and drag for Taylors of Martley in Kingspan colours, pictured at West Pennine, Knighton Depot, prepared to go to work

We havn’t got one driver who enjoys these at all. They are all swap bodies and there are even some flats to go on them aswell. And because i’m the shunter i can’t get 1/2 as much done as when we had a fleet of artics.

Dave the Renegade:

Hi again Tony,
Can understand that they are not popular, being close coupled they must be a pig to reverse.
Cheers Dave.

They don’t mind driving them as such. It’s the finding a place to park the trailer when they can only get a rigid into the drop. And then finding a place to swap the boxes over…
The whole fleet at kingspan will be drawbars one day.So they better get used to them.

Dave who has got the airbrushed blue scania from leominster or hereford.
It’s got the 17.5" wheels in the midlift and side skirts to cover them. He’s been doing a bit for burgoynes. You come and sit outside our place on a monday morning and you’d get the whole burgoyne fleet.
We also get victor morgan in most days. The one V8 he’s got has had a side pipe fitted.Sounds good. You can hear him coming down from shobdon.

Tonyb

Hi Tony,
Haven’t a clue about the airbrushed Scania. Got quite a few of Burgoynes, posted them on the Welsh Border thread. Going to get some pics of their Spanish Dodge’s sometime. Had the chance a while back, but didn’t bother, sowill have another go.
I live close to the Gore Quarry, so no problem getting pics when I have time, a lot of artics from all over the country coming in at the moment, so will get some more of them.
Cheers Dave.

hi chris.sorry dont have any more photos .i remember arthur the fitter who worked there but it was so long ago i have forgotten the drivers names.i worked for mike prosser back then in the late 70’s and worked from 10.00am to 8.00pm as a fitter then i used to go out at night helping load trailers at llanwern or the orb works.or go out with the littlewoods drivers delivering to the shops for some cash! the photo was taken by me as we tried to get our trucks out of the yard(one of prossers f88’scan be seen behind the cab of the scania 80)that was some snow storm back then.the 2 guys in the photo are our other fitter brian and dave one of the drivers.

Thanks for that Bob,I remember Arthur the fitter.I was on drawbars regular at Maltby and one of the first trips I did with one was to the Ross depot, there was just enough room to turn round in that yard with a Transconti,no problem with a Scania 111though.

Chris

LOOK WHAT I JUST FOUND.this was a pic i thought i lost .have just found it with some wedding photos!.it shows a couple of littlewoods 16 tonners and left to right ,nobby powell ,john powell (his brother) mike prosser and mike overthrow.

it is amazing what you find .this pic is of doug (?)who i think was manager of the depot , who always worried me as i thought he was gay!,and the other chap is colin who was working for ross tyres who had a unit at the back of littlewoods unit (he now runs colins tyres in ross)

Those photos must have been taken late 70s Bob.Is that a “D” series Ford in the old orange colour? I started with them in 1979 and the orange livery had been changed to blue by then. You’re right, the depot manager was called Doug Williams IIRC,I never met him with me being on nights, but heard plenty about him.Not sure about him being gay  .
Thanks for the photos.

Chris.

sorry about the quality of the pics but i only had an instamatic back then as i am no david bailey! was doug realy gay? he went to caldicot when they moved and i have not seen him since.have seen arthur the fitter in ross many times and last saw him about a month ago, still with that pipe in his mouth!.some of prossers wagons;

hi chris, looks like that is a ‘redline’ leyland terrier? going by the shape of the front panel ,could be wrong . glad i could help. bob.

I forgot about the “Redlines” Bob,that’s what it will be.
If Arthur has the same pipe as when I met him it will have given good service!

Late 2007 Burgoyne’s did a lot of loads for me from Llyswen near Brecon returning Equipment to our
yard at Red Scar Ind Park, Preston. Lancs. They seem to have a diverse number of marques in the fleet.
Speaking of Hereford Hauliers, about 45 years ago I used to run rhubarb from around the Doncaster area
into Hereford Canners (I think they ran Red and White lorries) It was a pigs year to load, the rhubarb was
cut and tied into small bundles, we then had to stack it on our trailers, you were not allowed to sheet it
completely because it made it sweat, just a fly sheet over the top so you could rope it. With no motor ways
and driving KV ERF’s with 6LX 120 Gardner engines it would take upto 7 hours. It was very dangerous going into
transport cafes, when you came out everyone seemed to have helped them selves to a boiling  regards Big Al

Hi Big aL,
Burgoynes still run a mix of wagons, Renaults,Fodens,Scania’s, a few Leyland/Dafs on the Marquee side. I remember Hereford canners, they were at Three Elms on the outskirts of Hereford, like a lot of firms, now long gone.
Cheers Dave.

Funny you mention rhubarb, I did a load once from round the Doncaster area to Belgium for an inspection and then on to Biars-sur-Cere where it went into jam, the factory belonged to Andros Conserves and in 1970 that was a good run, especially when you were not informed of the delivery address until 5 pm in Belgium and had to be in Biars-sur-Cere for the morning!
