Help needed to go it alone

Hi,

I know a lot of people on here might think im crazy but after 9 years on class 1 distance work i think i can make money doing it for myself

Can anybody tell me how i go about it… ie: how do i get my cpc and operators licence

Buying the unit and trailer is the easy part, i just dont know where to start.

Do i get my cpc 1st, then apply for the operators licence.

Another thing i got an application for an o licence and it asks for reg number of truck or trucks i want to operate, do i need to buy any
vehicles before i apply or can you apply without having any vehicles??

any info would be welcome…

You can apply without any vehicles, in fact you would struggle to buy a vehicle on finance without a licence.

Here is the definitive guide…

The idiots guide to operator licensing

popcorn anyone??

I think the way things are at the moment wait a while, but seeing as you need CPC, O Licence,GOOD WORK, parking and vehicles this wont happen overnight. So by the time everything is all sorted itl be a few months , Maybe things will be looking up work wise by then. If you want to make a Million In Transport now you have to start off with 2 Million,But seriously take your time get GOOD WORK make sure you have enough back up money it may take 90 days before the first chq comes in,but you will already have paid fuel parking tyres odds n s
odds etc on 30 days. Good luck. Popcorn and a coke Please.

Operator CPC comes first, get on with this as it takes 3-6 months to get and is probably worth having even if you decide not to go on your own. Read the other threads in this forum as this topic has been covered before many, many times.

Thanks for the replys guys… going to look into getting my operator cpc then take it from there…

You reckon you can make money doing it yourself, yet you haven’t got a clue on how to go about it. :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:

You will also need to break open your other piggy bank as the entry level cash requirement is rising from £6200 to £8100 with another £4500■■? quid per additional vehicle. These increases apply from Jan 1st 2010.

Happy Christmas :unamused:

my advise is…do it! if thats what u want to do, then go 4 it. on here you will always find smartarse comments of other users, dont listen to them and only listen to the advise that is given to you.

operators cpc first then ur operator licence!
remember to make time for your drivers cpc aswell and the funds!!
one thing ive been looking at is making myself ‘limited’ doesnt cost the earth and worth while to look at!
hope u got plenty of cash to burn aswell before ur 1st payday!!

How much does it cost?

If you need to ask you dont know enough yet. Go back sit down and think REALLY HARD.

THATS A LOAD OF BULL, HOW ELSE ARE PEOPLE SUPPOSED TO LEARN? BY MAKING THE MISTAKES FIRST? OR BY ASKING QUESTIONS AND LEARNING FROM OTHERS? NUMPTY

It’s truly difficult to get a helpful answer to this type of question on this forum as has became obvious! Main reason is that it’s a very broad question which is being asked. The other big reason is the UK is currently in a recession seemingly without end. Also, many folks who read this forum are super-cynical, sarcastic and like a laugh at others’ expense, which is part of human nature! It’s just the way it is. Internet forums add to this problem…people post with a bit more acid than they might do face-to-face. Equally though, anyone can post an innocent question which may seem crazy to others…these folks will naturally let you know their thoughts also!

Loads has been written about setting up for yourself. The transport game takes a bit more getting into than a lot of other businesses as it’s heavily regulated and therefore admin-heavy to get started, sadly.

If you want to start on yer own mate do your research, keep asking the questions but be prepared for the wisecrack answers as they will most certainly come. Filter out the bull and you should be left with some kind of info which you can use to formulate a plan (or not).

Do your sums and try not to lose your shirt…keep costs as low as possible and income as high as you can get. Minimize your risk…for example consider renting a truck for a while to see how it goes and that way you can hand it back at short notice with no penalty if you chuck it. Plan for no wages for the first 6/8 weeks at least, longer if you can afford not to take them…you will need this cash for other expenses.

Good luck my friend, no one said setting up for yourself was easy but you can overcome most things if you want it enough.

I don’t think they are smartarse answers, cynical or sarcastic, just that they have been answered many times before yet still people ask the same old same old week after week.

In the recent past I wrote a complete guide from planning to go it alone to the first pay cheque, as did many others, it does get a bit repetitive answering the same questions. I have posted many informative links as have others too.

Then removal boy asked a relevant question and was shot down, remember he is only about 14 or 15 and will be an owner operator sooner than most of the posters on here.

some people are newbies to the forum and may not understand or realise that the questions have been answered!!

thaere is a lot of smartarse answers, because theres a lot of smartarse people on this forum!!!

a lot of the time the first question doesnt do them any favours , if some one came on and said " i,m looking to start on my own, got the funds in place could anyone recommend a good buisness bank account or which truck manufacturers are doing the best finance deals at the moment" then they may get a little more positive response, but the 1st question usually goes along the lines of " i want to be an owner driver, where can i get some good work and what colour lorry should i buy? should it have a fridge, microwave or both?" i know thats a bit vague but you can see the point i,m trying make, good luck to anyone who genuinely fancies it, does the research and gives it ago, in this climate i take my hat off to you, but dont come on here thinking oohh this owner driver driver lark sounds good, i wonder how quick i will be able to afford a new scania 620 because you wont last 2 minutes

set up a limited company with a vat number, even if it’s not traded for a couple of years, it dosn’t matter.
don’t apply for one truck. apply for 10. so you can start with 3, then increase with the work.
the biggest problem is overtrading. which is say running all ten trucks, but not having the money to pay for the running costs before you get any money in.
trust no one.

“Trust no one”

Wise words, oh sage!

Sad but true.

Great idea Phil, providing you have 45k lying about untouched.
