i would never set up again using my own money. £45k of someone elses. Like RBS plc.
raising money is easy, paying it back isn’t so easy.
if you want to raise some money, then make sure you have a letter of intent from a secure customer.
and if some snotty little [zb] decides that you should not be paid, then break his fingers with a lump hammer, and pour petrol on him.
it really works. try it.

i’d have taken that as a going concern. small enough to be affordable, big enough to get solid contracts.

would you not be even more cautious phil, taking over a going concern thats going under as opposed to starting fresh, or is it that they would have contracts vehicles etc in place allready? only asking as ive no idea whats concerned in doing something like this
lets say it owes £200000. you arrange to pay 20% as full and final settlement. this money and working capital is raised from the bank.
all you really need is a letter of intent from a prospective customer. it’s a lot cheaper than starting from scratch.
one of the worst problems is the drivers. there is always a handful who arn’t satisfied whatever you give them, so you need to sack them to show the rest who’s in charge.

just out of interest , how many firms have you started “with your money?”
and breaking fingers and pouring petrol on people isnt exactly the way to get paid off anyone , and will def make you unusable by any firm again
or maybe i am just being cynical or a smartarse
Wheel Nut:
I don’t think they are smartarse answers, cynical or sarcastic, just that they have been answered many times before yet still people ask the same old same old week after week.In the recent past I wrote a complete guide from planning to go it alone to the first pay cheque, as did many others, it does get a bit repetitive answering the same questions. I have posted many informative links as have others too.
Then removal boy asked a relevant question and was shot down, remember he is only about 14 or 15 and will be an owner operator sooner than most of the posters on here.
Of course they’re smartarse, cynical, sarcastic answers…and you know it! However I take your point, I’ve previously read your guide, very comprehensive too.
However, as long as this forum exists then the most basic questions will still come up, you already know this. It’s up to you if you want to post or answer them…in the same way as it’s up to anyone else to in turn criticize you. Isn’t the internet fun?!
chaversdad:
a lot of the time the first question doesnt do them any favours , if some one came on and said " i,m looking to start on my own, got the funds in place could anyone recommend a good buisness bank account or which truck manufacturers are doing the best finance deals at the moment" then they may get a little more positive response, but the 1st question usually goes along the lines of " i want to be an owner driver, where can i get some good work and what colour lorry should i buy? should it have a fridge, microwave or both?" i know thats a bit vague but you can see the point i,m trying make, good luck to anyone who genuinely fancies it, does the research and gives it ago, in this climate i take my hat off to you, but dont come on here thinking oohh this owner driver driver lark sounds good, i wonder how quick i will be able to afford a new scania 620 because you wont last 2 minutes
Spot on.

Superb…it’s starting to sound like a re-run of ‘The Sweeney’!

I’ve still got 500 odd quid owing to me from a gentleman at Mendlesham ! This sounds like a feasable idea.

X-press waste. sold
Amc press. went under
twr press.went under
fylde tree care, sold
aggregate contracts. sold
exterior renovations, split up with partner. very messy.
owned a garage, buying and selling cars and whatever i could lay my hands on.
timberdec. made a heck of a lot of money, but work started to dry up because of being undercut, so i diversified.
if anyone fell on hard times and couldn’t pay, then i would help them recover. if they were trying it on and being a smug little git, then they would suffer.

That is the one. And before you all start LimeyPhil hit it right on the head
TRUST NOBODY only do things for yourself and think long and hard about it. You need to be nasty and nice at the same time. If you do decide to try it good luck in the current climate if you can make it now you can make it anytime, But remember YOU are working for YOU and nobody else.
