HELP! anybody please, accident with tea & notepad

I have gone and knocked a cup of tea straight over the keyboard on my notepad ( little laptop) last night, I tipped it upside-down immediately to drain out ,& moped it down with copious handfuls of tissue to absorb as much liquid as possable.

Despite putting it a short way away from a gentle heat sorce (radiator), it will turn on & off, but I can’t type anything in the password box, it dose not respond at all. Is there anything else I can do to try & get it working again, or is it a No hoper ■■?

I’m Absolutely gutted about it , as it’s like my right arm is missing. I’m having to use my phone again to put this message on TKNT . Does anybody have any ideas or suggestions please ?

I know someone who dried theirs out by putting it in a large box full of rice !!

I’ve seen mobiles dried out this way but that was the first I ever heard of a laptop being done like that :unamused:

The rice attracts the damp apparently

Thanks for the surgestion Rog,
I don’t have any rice, but I do have silicone type beads bags ,out of the containors ,for keeping damp out on sea crossings, I’ll give it a try,

I have had this notepad less than a year, & kept it immaculate, despite taking it with me nearly everywhere!!

I can’t help with any suggestions but I do know how you feel without it.
I broke the screen on my phone and was without it for nearly 2 weeks :frowning:

I would say it needs a keyboard replacement. Tea will have got in the membrane for the keys and wil be stopping them making contact.

Cheers matt3903, a lot of things I do on my notepad are nearly all work related, & now my phone is starting to play up too, I just hope that isn’t going to pack up as well, don’t they say things happen in three’s !! I just couldnt get by without my phone ,& notepad.

Csujamie, do you think the water would have gone further into the works, or just stayed inside this ‘membrane’? Would you have any idea as to what it may cost to replace the keyboard part please, & how long it may take to replace it.

The tea in the keyboard will be making it permanently contact.
Try it with a usb keyboard.
If any tea did make its way to the motherboard it’ll only be a matter of time before it needs replacing, and by then you’d be better off buying a new laptop.
Keyboard replacement is quite easy. Worst bit is trying to prise any plastics off without breaking them.

Cheers Dav1d, I’ll have to scout about for a usb keyboard to try.
I was just thinking about the costing of this one & ,like you say, comparing it against buying a new one!
The keys won’t type anything in the password box, although it will click on the easy access button, & recorded voice will play, but sounds a bit like an echo.

I’ll definately try your suggestion as soon as I can locate a usb keyboard, thanks.

Inside a pillow and put in tumble dryer ,worked for me

Cheers deeireland for your suggestion, I’ll try a couple of things first ,& see if they work. I did put a mobile phone under a hand dryer once after it went down the pan!..(it slid out of my pocket as I turned to open the door ), sadly it never did anymore than light up the screen.

I’ ll keep trying ,just got to get this working again. Thanks.

As Dav1d said use an USB keyboard and mouse to get on to it. If that works then, copy off all your data to an
external hard drive. Eventually the notepad will fail because of the spill.

I’ve never known any laptop or notepad to work properly again after a spill.

Cheers colingl, I’m hoping to find a usb keyboard to try over the next couple of days. Like you say , if it works I will copy data .

If It’s likely to fail in the long run, due to spillage, then probably it may not be even worth putting it in for repair, although I suppose it may be worth asking anyway ,if only to weigh up the situation. Thanks .

Asda, tesco etc usually do keyboards and other bits of hardware cheap.

Cheers skids, I’ll take a look , just need to get a free space in a busy schedule, even my phone is playing up with the extra workload. Thanks.

Whatever you do do not use PC World. Bunch of [zb]s who don’t know their arse from their elbow when it comes to repairs! :smiling_imp:

A company I know and can recommend is Techincal Progress in ■■■■■■■■■■■ Clicky I don’t know your location, but if they are handy for you they’ll give a fair assessment of any damage and any costs to fix it. I’ve used them a few times.

Cheers colingl for the tip about a suitable company, do you know if there. Tecnical progress in Telford please, I can’t open the ‘link’ on your post , on my phone. I have just gained access to a usb keyboard, so I shall what I can do!
Thanks.

Sorry Bonnie Lass they are in ■■■■■■■■■■■■ I made an assumption from your user name.

But non the less a local independent repairer would be a better bet than …

Cheers colingl, I was just hoping they may have had another branch down country, I have just come up country from south west Wales this afternoon.

I did manage to borrow a usb keyboard, & had got though onto the web pages, just testing, but there was No joy as it Couldnt’t or wouldn’t open a page, even with a good signal,& nor would it enter any files. And the second time I went to try just shows a dark screen with Enter +Choice on it, but can’t enter at all now…So I’m thinking It’s doomed. I shallkeep trying though,! Thanks.

If it is broken beyond repair then get it sold on ebay for spares, surprising what prices broken tech bits fetch (I got over £20 for a broken tom tom :open_mouth: )

Cheers skids, ebay might be worth selling it on , to put towards another new one. Would there be anyway they may ‘Claw’ any of my info out of the notepad, even though I’m not having any success myself .thanks.
