I will be flying to Thailand later today and plan to spend a month relaxing after working in the U.K. . Then I will be heading down to Penang Malaysia, where I live. Im planning on going to N.Z. sometime around April to get my licence exchanged, my idea is that I want to work in N.Z. for 4 to 5 months and then return to Malaysia, and then go back to N.Z. in 2011 and work again for a similar period. I do not wish to become a permanent resident, so Im hoping that will make it easier for me to work there. I have done a little bit of research and cannot see any major problems with my plans, but as always I stand to be corrected. So if anyone has any thoughts, hints, or tips I would welcome your help. P.S. I will be jet lagged drunk sleeping and relaxing in BKK for a few days so no rush for replies. Thanks in advance cheers Paul
Stage 1 complete, Im in BKK and im well rested. Its nice to be warm, I will be heading for Koh Samui and Koh Phan Ghan next. cheers Paul
Ok a bit of an update for anyone who is interested, I have left Bangkok and Im now waiting for the ferry to Koh Phan Ghan, I will be staying on Had Yao beach, which is one of the quieter spots on KPG. I will let the younguns go to Had Rin its a bit to crazy for my taste. T.T.F.N. Paul
And here we are working away, you lucky git

P.s what happened to the overland to oz plan? Or was it to malaysia? You told me on the train but i cant remember!
you think you can make enough money in 4-5 months in NZ then 6 months in asia? sounds like a good life style if you can, thought work in NZ wasnt very well paid comparitively.
you should try chaloklum in koh pha ngan, thats a really nice laid back place to stay. do some wake boarding
i’ll be over in thailand in feb, cant wait, have fun
Hi Chris, I went chaloklum for a meal the other day, the weather was,nt very nice but the food was great. I will leave the wakeboarding if you dont mind, Im more of a toe dipper . I already have a couple of things going on here in Malaysia, so the NZ work would be the cream on top. In fact I could probably manage ok without going to work there, but I fancy a challenge before I decide to quit trucks for good and extra money is always usefull. If you are planning to vist Penang whilst your over here let me know and Im sure I can fit a night on the town into my hectic schedule, if not have cracking time on KPG. Cheers Paul. P.S. Jon the overland trip has been mothballed on account of it not being one of my brighter ideas
Hey Paul, have you already found a firm to work for or are you looking atm?
Hi Grant, I am still looking for contacts in NZ, I already have a few leads but Im not rushing into anything just yet. I am busy in Malaysia at the moment working on a new project and an existing one. Cheers Paul

Getting ■■■■■■ isn’t a project Paul
To quote the late Roy Castle, Dedications what you need
you dont need a NZ license if your here for less than a year just a uk one will be fine
what sort of work will you be looking for when your here? are you looking to make some quick money or see the country
when are you over in NZ? I will be looking for tanker drivers for Sept 2010 to Jan 2011. South Island based driving Kenworths.
Thanks STE thats good to know. Placidcasual that sounds interesting we will have to keep in touch. The timing could be good for me because I am just in the process of renovating a cafe which I hope to open in about 3 months. Thanks for the help guys, oh well back to the decorating, it aint all sun and sand
Where’s your cafe?? In Georgetown??
Yes, Chulia st. I read your post about your fairground adventures. I met a guy a couple of years ago he was in Penang to get a visa, I cant remember his name though, but he was working on the rides, not sure if he was with your outfit. Small world eh.
It certainly is a small world. I’m not sure about that guy, might have been a Belgian that was with us… There was another firm though who were working in the north of the peninsula. As regards West Malaysia I’ve only worked in Johor and Negri Sembilan. Furthest north I’ve been is KL. Planned to drive up to Ipoh/Penang/Alor Setar many times but never made it for one reason or another.
Hi Duck, The guy I met was a brit im sure, he was about 6ft tall with a no1 haircut slim build. I think his name was Mick but im crap with names so that could be wrong. If you do decide on a trip north the Cameron highlands is worth a visit, the roads are great fun lots of twisty stuff and its a lot cooler up there, also the tea plantations and strawberry farms are a good way to pass a few hours. If you go to Ipoh look for Tescos there is a cracking food court nearby. Penang is a great place for food also with lots of things to do and see. Have you been to Malacca, I really liked it there, how they close Jonquers st. to traffic at night all the old buildings light up and the food mmmmmmmmm. Cheers Paul.
