Hiya Dennis,
The Ford D1000 I drove Had a Perkins V8, 5speed box,2speed Eaton Axel,It was a J reg,1972 I think!
It was so heavy ,the payload capacity i could carry was just under 10 Ton
Norman Croad,Torquay.

I’ve got to keep you straight Norm ! if your D1000 was J reg it was a 70/71 motor, on the other hand if it was a 1972 reg it may have been a 72/73 L reg ! J or L, similar I suppose ! Cheers Dennis.

It was Deffinitly a J Reg,I reckon if it had a ■■■■■■■ in it,Might have performed better!

Hiya Norm, I ran both the ■■■■■■■ and a couple of Perkins V’s and all three gave good service but if I was to choose between the two engines I would have to choose the ■■■■■■■ which IMHO was the better of the two ! But having said that the Perkins did me OK and of course they had to work harder as they ran at 26ton and 28ton respectively whereas my ■■■■■■■ only ran at 16ton which was a doddle for it ! Cheers Dennis.

Hiya Dennis
The perkins V8 in mine i drove kept on blowing injector pipes,Remember when setting off on a sunday morning got as far as Taunton,Next thing diesel leaking onto Exhaust Manifold, smoke everywhere, old Bill appeared, they made a song & dance about it,in the end one of the fitters came out,Time i Lost,
The Handbrake was Naff,All niggleys things!!Thats life,

I accept that both the ■■■■■■■ and the Perkins V 's had a bad reputation but as I have said in an earlier post I can’t complain but I sure wouldn’t have wanted to run a fleet of them and I was glad to get into a position where I could start buying Atkis and the odd ERF ! Cheers Dennis.

Norman, your books will be in the post today, Friday. Enjoy the reading.

My Perky V8 used more oil than derv, but it had been to the moon & back a few times when I was “persuaded” to buy the ■■■■ thing! And I suppose 26/28 tons is OK for a Northern outfit- us Southern Softies liked to put a full load on ours.

Hiya Norm that’s a great shot of Brian in his younger days, would that Commer have been the motor he drove, I seem to recall his first motor was a Trader ? Cheers Dennis.

Some of us northerners tended to load nearer 30 or even 32! Kraft cheese to Scotland in a 40’ box made the mastiffs grunt a little! But I never got pulled over with a van, whereas with round timber you always looked overloaded. Charnleys of Longtown with their 6 wheel unit Big J’s and pole trailers did look the business!

As far as oil consumption went, a gallon a day kept the fitters away! I always thought that if they’d had a better system of returning it to the sump, instead of spraying it up the back of the cab, it would have been a lot more economical. I spent weekends spraying Heavy duty cleaner on the cab and trying to keep the exhausts mated to the outlets!

Unless of course - if you sold them before they had 100,000 miles on the clock, you would wonder what later owners were talking about!

John.

I never did discover whether more oil was leaking or being burnt! Before I bought the Ford I had been of the opinion that Gardners were a “mucky” engine but they had nothing on a worn out Perkins V8. :unamused:

Hey Norm, how do you explain those big tanks on that Commer Brian is stood by ? surely enough derv to run to Scotch and bacg to Devon ! but you only had an “egg cup” on the side of your Comet ! Cheers Dennis.

Hiya Dennis
Yes i wonder at times!!,If i tanked up at Penrith, Then Say i was Goin to S/hampton, Id tip S/hampton,Load sum Bits & peaces & then head back to yard,i was alright,I think i ran out twice since i had the Comet.
Now on my Ford D1000, i had twin Tanks, Think i could do about 700 or 800 miles before i had to fill up,i had no Worries there.
Norman Croad,Torquay.

This was my first new motor Norm, and it came with a single 40 gal tank so I bought and fitted a second hand 20 gal ex Trader tank which was an exact match as you can see. My main operation as an O/D was down to London and back so I had plenty of derv to do the round trip, I never bought any derv down the road ! The biggest set of tanks we ever had was on an 8LXB Sed/Atk sleeper which came with an 80 or 88 gal tank as standard and I had another identical one fitted on the other side. This motor could go up and down to the S. East twice without re-fueling and still have plenty in reserve. Cheers Dennis.

There will be a third and revised edition of “From Moorlands to Highlands” published in mid-July by Old Pond Publishing. I understand that it will contain over 80 photos that have come to light since the second edition was published. I hope that it is well received.

Lovely bit of roping and sheeting Bewick!
