Hi Dennis,
This is the Leyland Comet 4 wheeler,“Moorland Lady” i drove for Brian, when i first started in 1973
Done many a Scotch & north East runs with it.
Norman Croad,Torquay.
So what was the “spec” of this motor Norm ? Leyland 400, 6 speed O/d box and Albion axle ? Oh! and did it have power steering ? Cheers Dennis.
Hiya Dennis
Yes yr Right,I had sideboards as well,to carry Fireplaces & Earths,Destinations,Forfar & Elgin,
Trouble is it only had a small Diesel Tank,& The Seddon had a ■■■■■■■ in it!!
Hiya Norm, I am surprised that you only had a small tank on that Comet ! I would have thought that the mileages covered by the H & M fleet that you would have had either a larger tank or an additional one fitted ! In those days it was a saving to carry plenty of derv as it was cheaper out of your own bulk tanks than buying it on an agency card. I always had our motors kitted out with extra capacity so we could do a round trip to the S. East and back comfortably. I recall fitting an additional 20 gal tank to my D1000 which gave me 60 gal and when I bought a new Bedford for my young brother to drive I had the standard 20 gal replaced with a 45 gal tank that was used on Bedford Coach chassis. I also fitted an ex Leyland 60 gal tank to our first Mastiff unit as the standard tank was only 35 gal IIRC,I then piped the Bigger tank up as the main one as the original one was higher so it drained into the big tank. When I bought the second Mastiff it was delivered with (IIRC) a nice tidy 60 gal on one side and 30 gal matched one on the opposite side. When I started buying the Borderers they were delivered with two matching 62 gal tanks which gave plenty of leeway for a round trip ! Useless info I know but they were interesting times eh! Cheers Dennis.
i think that seddon is mentioned in john corahs book he didn’t seem too impressed when he drove it . I’m sure he said it had a 220 ■■■■■■■■ i think that pic was taken at the end of its days as there’s no n/s mirror and it looks to tatty for it to be up the road
Hi Dennis,The ERF I mentioned GUO 847D im possitive it had a ■■■■■■■ 220,& the Seddon had a ■■■■■■■ 220,
The diesel tank i had on my Leyland Comet, Got me to Penrith, where we had an account with Davidsons to top up,then run up to scotland & around, then back to Penrith & fuel up again, back in them days it was a 24hr garage,Very handy.

I think that the Seddon went ok, but John C thought it very noisy and vibrated plenty, to the extent that the screws holding the cab interior together fell out!. Mention of John’s book reminds me that it was a best seller for GF Publications (along with the Gardner book) and Moorlands to Highlands went to a revised reprint and sold out again. The book launch I hosted at Bovey Tracey was a brilliant day with many ex-drivers attending, mind you I had one hell of a bar bill to settle at the end of the day, but it was more than covered by the number of books I sold that day. Happy memories of a grand set of drivers of the “old school”.

I remember Davidsons well. I was driving for Hoover and we used Penrith as a changeover/ overnight stop Davidsons was our refuelling stop. Remember the H & M boys. Also Wallace Arnold, the coach company used the garage as well.

Hi atkiman
When i first started For Harris & Miners in the 70s,I had a Leyland Coment 4 wheeler, never let me down, done mainly Scotch & Nort East Runs,And Yes thats the Second Lorry i had the Ford D1000 i used to Drive,In the 70s,had a PERKINS V8
Went ok,done alot of Scotch & North East Runs,But come the end it was"nt man enough for me,kept letting me down. But i had sum good times back in them days,Away Sundays Back Fridays,Weekended away Sumtimes,They had 2 Mechanics,Alf Harvey & Mick Whiteway, very good at there work they did,
John spelled my surname wrong in the Book, lol,
Norman Croad,Torquay.
Hi Norman, Did the D series have a ■■■■■■■ as recorded in the book or a Perkins.
Dave.
Hi dave docra
The Ford D1000 Had a Perkins V8,5 speed box,Eaton 2 speed Axel,I drove it for a numba of years.
Norman Croad,Torquay.
What year/reg no was the D1000 Norm ? mine was a 1968/F reg and had the ■■■■■■■ V8/5speed/2 speed axle,I believe that Ford stopped using the ■■■■■■■ and did a deal with Perkins although they did have “Ford” on the rocker covers and referred to the engine as a “FORD” V8. Cheers Dennis.

The digs was kept by Johnny Waters who was a shunt driver for Hoover originally. Johnny is still alive and still living in Penrith.
Hiya Dennis,
The Ford D1000 I drove Had a Perkins V8, 5speed box,2speed Eaton Axel,It was a J reg,1972 I think!
It was so heavy ,the payload capacity i could carry was just under 10 Ton
