All of these devices that are there ostensibly to help one, have a nasty habit of turning on one just when one needs them most.
Remember when tachographs were going to protect us and help us do our jobs?
Remember when a speed trace “would never be used as evidence of speeding”?
Remember when tracking devices were there to help us in case we were accused of something we didn’t do?
Now we’ve been so conditioned into being spied upon, we’re volunteering to spend our own money to purchase yet another device to spy on us!
Your electronic buddy will take you from in-cab habeas corpus to mea maxima culpa in a flash. Caveat emptor.

Certainly looks like the car was in the wrong for that erratic manoeuvre but it does make me think the way I was taught to drive was maybe better than the modern thinking.
Turning Left or Straight on - Left Lane.
Anything after 12 o clock use Right Lane until you pass the exit before yours.
It has been debated many times.

The council road planners are making accidents by putting traffic turning right in the left hand hand lane of a roundabout.

I agree, but what if you were having a moment and swearing your head off or on the phone or whatever and your boss or manager knew you had one? Not handing it over wouldn’t look very good.
We’re all only human and these devices are de-humanising us bit by bit. Look at the post above about it changing your driving. How much stress is that going to cause, knowing that this thing is watching everything you do?

If he was in a 50 foot or whatever length it is now drawbar, the car would have hit the coupling because the front axle would be in a different postcode whilst the trailer was still in the left lane turning right instead of left.

Are you on drugs?
The ■■■■■■ in the car would have been in the wrong whatever because he was trying to overtake in a place where he shouldn’t have been trying to overtake anyway even if the truck had taken that exit. But that’s got nothing to do with the fact that road planners are going against every logical rule concerning the right way to use roundabouts in the case of left hand lanes being used for right turning traffic. So what the zb is your problem with that.

I’m thinking of the children who could potentially be in the back of the car.
Annoying isn’t it, when people post absolute rubbish on a serious thread.
Wiretwister:
Tyler, have you found that you drive differently now you have the Roadhawk recording the day? Does it act as a moderator on your own actions?
At the end of the day my company has fitted telematics tracking software to all vehicles including vans & monitor our speeds. It even saves data & can be looked at days after & if we were speeding on an a road it will show up. Anyone caught excessively speeding will face Disciplinary action. There for i have to stick close to the speed limits. I try to drive as best as i can everyday anyway so if i am involved in an accident & need to rely on roadhawk footage to clear my name then it shows i’ve been driving well enough. Driving properly doesn’t cause me any stress after all i’m sure we all try & drive as professionally as we can. Don’t we??

Clearly not everyone thinks cameras are a good idea & that’s fine. Just under a yr ago someone rang my company & accused me of road rage. Nothing happened but the guy doing the investigating told me I must have done something to upset the guy as he wouldn’t go to all the trouble of ringing & emailing the company if I hadn’t. It resulted in me being sacked
I appealed & was lucky to get my job back. This is when I decided to buy this camera. If I did do something wrong I would hold my hands up & admit it as that’s the sort of person I am. But in this case I was innocent but it was my word against his & I lost. I don’t want to lose my job through no fault of my own as I have mouths to feed & bills to pay etc etc.
If the camera can put me in the clear then its a good idea as in the case of my accident. Each to their own i say
Worth every penny. So many idiots on the road things can happen in the blink of an eye. I don’t see it as a spy but more of a guardian angel

I don’t think I was very clear. Do you find, for example, that you hold a greater distance from the vehicle in front since you started using the Roadhawk? I’m sure that we all like to think that we drive appropriately but does the fact that you are recording, and know that you are recording, your driving add a little extra incentive to concentrate, to a higher level, than before you started using it? After all we can all reflect on our perceptions/recollections when shown film of an actual event. In your own instance did the driver of the car try and apportion blame to you perceiving that your actions, rather than his, were the cause of the collision before learning of the forward facing camera?
This isn’t intended as a dig, I’m genuinely interested and believe that such devices are a good thing, even if it picks up the occasional profanity aimed at another road user.

Didn’t take any offence
I suppose i’m more aware now that if something goes wrong i may need to show footage. I would say i am alot calmer then i was as i know i have someone looking over my shoulder watching me drive. Not saying i never swear at people if they do something wrong because we are only human after all. Like i said i aim to drive to the best of my ability at all times but it does make you more aware by having the camera but i think thats a good thing.

I think both of you make good and valid points, and I can see why you take the positions that you do.
Look at it from a wider angle (pun not intended) though. Everybody who willfully fits one of these devices contributes to less freedom of choice for those who disagree with them. The more normalised they become, the nearer they get to being the industry norm. What’s the next step? Mandatory fitment. Then mandatory fitment in your private vehicle or you won’t get insurance. How long before they’re fitted in your home for the same reason?
If you think I’m being paranoid, have a think about how many insurance policies you are effectively obliged to have these days. Who sets the terms? The government and the insurance companies.
I noticed the grey wagon in the overtaking lane was on the limiter there, pretty bloody stupid on the 303!
as for the indicated 42, your not gona get nicked for it and children are not put at risk
We have them fitted to our trucks, we were told it was for insurance purposes but seeing as they don’t have an insurance company as such and have a set aside indemnity fund I took that with a pinch of salt. I don’t have a problem with them being fitted and they may in some cases be a good thing.
I have noticed that when they are fitted they also put a CCTV fitted warning sticker on the sides of the cab, is this a legal requirement ?

Good video but it doesn’t quite show all the road, although it does show both lanes marked for a right turn, so you have nothing to worry about
I agree Malc, I think that you should be as close to the centre of the roundabout as possible and move over as you pass the exit before the one you want (if that makes sense) but in this case the car was clearly at fault, even if the lorry was taking that exit as it was a single carriageway and the car would not have a lane if the lorry was already in the only lane available. Shame it was only a little knock, a bit more speed and the lorry could have t-boned the car properly and pushed him down the road until the driver crapped his pants, might make them drive a little better if there were more consequences to their stupidity. At least that’s one area where the Eastern Europeans are better than the Brits, they side swipe a car, they do a proper job of it
