Guy

Another “trailer character” whom Saviem may remember was Bill Field, who was the salesman for Fleet trailers, made by Praills of Hereford. Bill was another who would attempt to close a deal by the Alcohol Method! I was at school with his elder son, David who now runs a fleet of coaches and mini buses, while my father had the “privilege” of working for his mother when she ran livestock lorries in the 1930s.
But I’ve wandered off topic yet again- I don’t think any of the above drove a Guy! :unamused:

I don’t know why but I liked that warrior cab, I found it comfortable to drive. We had one (just one) 6 wheel tipper at Fred Chappells, Batley in 1960 when I was a lad just starting. IIRC it had an AEC engine.

So I wonder what engine this Big J had in it,and know I don’t mean an 8LXB,but would it maybe have had the ■■■■■■■ V6 ?Cheers Bewick.

Would there have been enough room under that rather narrow bonnet for a V6?
I daresay someone will know if Guy ever fitted them. And if they had any problems with cooling?

Here is the CM roadtest of the Big J V6:
archive.commercialmotor.com/arti … ross-artic
Interestingly, the high-revving ■■■■■■■ gave superior fuel consumption to a Gardner 150-engined Big J, according to the article. Reliability problems with the ■■■■■■■ V engines are discussed on the ■■■■■■■ thread.

Many thanks for the info, matey. After all these years I have only just learned that the standard engine fitted to the early Big Js was the ■■■■■■■ V6. Just shows that you’re never too old to learn!
And Bewick will be interested by that 9.3 mpg figure!

Hi, Folks, We had a guy unit with AEC 505 no problems with over heating ,But had two ego cabbed 1,A E C 505 and 1 Leyland 600 unit both gave a lot of headgasket trouble i put it down to the size of the rads could be wrong ,Cheers Barry

The big j fitted with the V6 ■■■■■■■ didn’t have a bonnet in the cab, it was a flat floor !

So the Guy Big J would have been the first British “walk around” cab, similar to the Renault Magnum 30 years later,Doh! I would have preferred a Big J to a Magnum    :sunglasses: :sunglasses: :sunglasses: :sunglasses:

So the Guy Big J can lay claim to having been the first British “walk around” cab, similar to the Renault Magnum 30 years later DOH! now I would have preferred the Big J to the Magnum,no contest if they had still been in production at the time I bought the Magnums :sunglasses: :sunglasses:           Bewick.

You bought Magnums, Bewick? At long last you’ve admitted to dropping a clanger

I’ve never seen a Big J with a flat floor. This site surprises me every day! Any in preservation? If so, I’d be interested in having a look.

Just three “ROF”,it’s called “dipping your toe in the water” but I’ve got to say Renault initially sent us a Magnum demo for a while and I recall it’s first outward load was down to Munich and we sent one of our “dyed in the wool” Scania drivers with it with the idea that he would come back and give it the big thumbs down :frowning: However,he came back raving about it,“when can I have one Boss, great motor!” :open_mouth: :open_mouth: So we tried a few :sunglasses: With regard to the Big J’s with the ■■■■■■■ V6 and flat floor I can’t say I ever came across one but I don’t think they will have built many as they were an unmitigated disaster by all accounts.I think there is a fuller explanation further back on this thread that gives a good explanation to how and why the ■■■■■■■ and Guy link up took place.Cheers Bewick.

The early J’s with the flat floor, tilt cab( if you could call it that !!) and ■■■■■■■ V6 were mainly 66/67 models and soon got ditched due to engine probs. but the flat floor cab didn’t die then and was used for BRS 28t units fitted with the Perkins 540 V8’s, we had dozens of them on K&L regs 1972 which were mainly used on light jobs, car spares etc. yes and they were walk through !

Well I’m blowed! I had two Big Js, one '68 & one '69, both with 205 ■■■■■■■ & 6-speed AEC box. I thought they were absolutely brilliant at the time.

Hiya…guy bigJ the first walk through cab…No No what about the 1965 ford tilt cab. then years before that the sentinal
with the horizontal engine. they had a bench seat and flat floor in the mid 50’s
