The only 8 pot big J you will see is if someone makes a model of one or BMA.Finland draws you one!
Or indeed Alan Spillett! Why did he paint a Gardner 240 badge on this one, I wonder…? Robert

What a great picture, all credit to Alan Spillett for it’s authenticity, looks like a full load from ICI Grangemouth, the give away being the blue plastic drums on view to the rear of the trailer.
MD 910 was a Maddiston motor, the Big J 240 I collected from Newton le Willows depot was numbered as OD 918 IIRC.

Artistic license?
Alan Spillett is a good friend of mine, and he never paints anything that is not authentic. Why would he want to paint a 240 badge unless it was on the vehicle. Which it was, as many members on here have actually driven these vehicles.
Cheers Dave.

Well said, Dave: it was precisely Alan’s integrity that motivated me to post the picture at all. Robert
Proof at last. Alan would never use “artistic licence” in anything he painted. I’ve known him a long time, and a nicer, more modest (given his talent and ability) man could you ever wish to meet.
Well so far we have painted evidence from a bona fide artist, first hand experience from folk who have driven at least one of them but STILL the non-believer’s will steadfastly stick to their theory that they never actually existed!!!

Who’s “gear” were you smoking at the time David, that Big J had an AEC 505 engine in it and lets face it the A580 to Manchester was fairly flat IIRC. Can’t resist ! Cheers Dennis.

Pete.
Come on Pete there is a lot difference between a Painting and a Photo, you can make anything look right on an,extremely good, painting but a photo dosen’t lie !!

Yes ! but regardless of authenticity an extremely excellent painting which I’m sure that James and Alex would have been proud to have hanging in the Board room at Maddiston in years gone by.Bewick.
Bewick’s consistently negative attitude comes from his desire to push up the price of the mountain of 240s that he’s still got stashed in the barn in t’■■■■■■■■ hills. Sadly for the Milnthorpe entrepreneur, the Guy Motors plant had closed before he got around to swapping them all for the RR engines with which they left Wolverhampton. I have to admit that it was a nice trick but not even Bewick can win all the time!
Hiya i saw a tool box one day with Gardner 240 badge on it. by the way the chap was carrying it with
one hand it was only full of spanners. in fact nearly everyone at ERF had a 240 badge on there tool boxes
makes me think there was more badges made than engines.
