In the late 60s I had a Minivan with a Gardner 150 badge on it. I was amazed at the number of people who asked if it was really a diesel!
Ive still got mine on display for all to see who visit me, Regards Larry.

I can remember seeing a 240-88 that had a Gardner 240 badge on the grille, it quite often parked on Balls Pond Rd, it was from up north, my guess is the driver had a bit of crumpet nearby.

Funnily enough I had a Mini van when I was 17 and come to think of it there was no room in the back because the engine filled the space !! So that must have been the same kind of engine as ROF had in his, mine was an 8 cyl engine though Do I sense another “hare” is up and running ?
Bewick.
P.S. Iv’e only got an odd shot of my mini van but unfortunately, same as the difficulty experienced by the Big J thread,I haven’t got any shots of the engine but believe me it had the 240 LXB engine, well I think it did ! Bewick.

Hiya Dan do you no how the Gardner /Volvo come about…a pal of mine Brian got smashed up in a Atki 240 of Tideswells.
there was a Volvo in Tideswell,s yard with a blown engine.Eric Tideswell never beaten decided to put the Atki engine
and box into the volvo. hay presto job done. the engine just come to the back of the cab. no one has a photo of the lorry.
in the book about Staffodshie hauliers by Ros Unwin there,s a photo of Tideswells yard with a Volvo in the distance.
that must be the only photo any one has of it… its said Volvo made Eric take the Volvo badge off it. i think it had HTS
on the grill. i saw it stacks of times pulling there low loader to steam rallies . just never took a photo.
John
Funnily enough John I saw that Gardner/Volvo unit broken down in the bus pull-in by Hall Leys Park in Matlock many moons ago, couldn’t believe my eyes when I spotted it when the cab was tilted! We had a driver briefly at Tilcon (Kevin based) who I think came from Tideswells, Paul Jones, he lived at Kingsley Holt and that would be in 1975, he had an S50 halfcab NRA 195J after we fitted a fresh cab to it following a fire. I think he later went back to work there?
Pete.
i recall that volvo with the 240 . i was nighting out on shepton mallet market place and the driver invited me in for a brew . we got nattering and he told me about the lorry , he even fired it up to prove the point . he seemed pleased enough with it . cheers , dave

The only thing I had in the back of mine was a mattress. If only I could remember why…
Hiya,
In the Alan Spillett picture have you noticed the proximity of the trailer to the back
of the Big “J” cab had there been the big Percy in that I reckon the back two pots or
at least the rocker box cover would have got a “bit bent” when screwing around.
thanks harry, long retired.

Who’s side are you on Pete ■■ Dennis.
He’s come over to the Dark Side, Dennis. You know it makes sense!
just another Badge, But of Quality in it"s day, had a couple of bad experiences with windscreens falling/jumping out? once going to Frauhaufs at derham to collect a new box van when I worked for harry lawsons B/Ferry, middle winter most of the way back with no screen, happy days, and the BRS Battersby lane on the timber out of Garston another screen out, just get on with it LOL"" Cheers C.
I had a screen shatter on the second Big J I drove. The windscreen company said there were no screens available until their young apprentice informed his boss that the windscreen from an ERF A-series was the same. Problem solved.

One of our Big J’s was rolled over at Lindale on the A590,it landed on the grass verge at the side of the roundabout and the screen flopped out onto the grass unbroken,we put it back in on it’s return to the workshop no worse for wear !Cheers Bewick.
Hi, Mr Bewick , We ran a lot of B M C ,702 modles the windscreens popping out all the time got on to the Ajents to complain the they sent the modification ,4 bits of bent tin and told pop rivet them on it did the trick the last one we done came in before we had time to fit them window had poped out bounced out hit the road still in tact ,We put it back in popped the bits on job done a week later a stone hit it bang shatered , Well just abit of usless info, Cheers Barry
Dennis
I think you’re telling porkies about your mini-van, we all know mini engines are transverse and we all know an 8 pot Percy would be too long.
As for it going in the back ====well I mean who’s going to swallow that, there’s no way it would fit to the mini gearbox!!!
