GUY Big J 8LXB Tractor Unit

Ti,If you drove a Guy Big J with an 8LXB over Dennis lawn and through his cabbage patch he would swear it was a ■■■■■■■■■■■ can’t win.He isn’t going to see a pic of the rear of the cab because nobody has one. He’s seen pics of the front by several of us,blokes that drove them have stated the fact that they existed.
I’m afraid its an age problem, don’t be to harsh  .
Cheers Dave.

Ok Cheers Dave

Tamworth1:
Mr Bewick, the operator was Swiftways who operated from the Tamworth area. Having rebuilt many 8 potters in my time im surprised you need more evidence and will not take my word. Cheers T1

Hi T1,

Dont get too worried about the non believers,Dennis and Co have already had irrefutable verbal proof from numerous men, drivers[I drove one for Smith of Maddiston],mechanics, breakdown companies, etc, etc, they all seem to think no picture, therefore it didnt exist!!

Happy Christmas to all “believers”!!!

Take it easy,

David

there is a shot of a big j having a lie down on the peak district thread , but you can’t see the sump properly . if it had rolled the other way we might have had proof .

Well you’ve appeared to have destroyed one theory T1,that Smith of Maddiston had all but one of the Big J 8 potters as the other one was down in the Welsh marches somewhere !! You learn something every day! However, seeing as you have chosen to join the “fray” and seem to know a bit about the engines, maybe you could throw some light on who else had Big J’s with the 8 potter engine in the Midlands where the Big J had good following in it’s day.I have never said there was no such motor,I only asked for photographic evidence, which to date has not been forthcoming ! Cheers Bewick.

you might see one in the sky christmas eve with a fat bloke with a beard dressed in red at the wheel, thats if you get enough 20 year old malt down ya neck or what ever your tipple may be. A very happy and healthy christmas to one and all on this web site and a happy new year to you all . fredm and family

Hi Ramone, I can’t remember the name of the firm, they were from Kingswinford, steel hauliers it was a dropside flat, I remember reading an article in the local paper about it, maybe someone on here has a pic.

Was there only 1 i thought they had a couple ?

hi all,
maybe?you mean theodore emms?a steelstock holder, who,as i recall, went on strike just after having some brand new aec’s delivered.i think emms were on strike for over 15 years? and the very very low mileage aec’s were locked indoors.two friends of mine later owned two of them,a marshall 6 wheel flat and mandator unit respectivley.i have plenty of pictures of both, though the government has got me on xmas decoration duty this afternoon    .
regards andrew.

Did they survive?

A couple of Emms wagons survive -

This one didn’t survive - it worked into the 90’s and was re engined with a 760 (various Flickr posters’ pics - linked)

Could be ex.Machins of Stoke a firm who ran steel from BSC Gartcosh in the 80s

New to Fordhouse transport of Wolverhampton who mothballed it for several years and never registered it, bought by Thomas Ingles, W-ton who registered it as new in 84 and added the sleeper. Think it then went to Scotland before the present owner got it.

Cheers mate, I thought someone on here would know.

Here’s Richard’s Guy with its previous owners:

hiya,
Now Dennis that particular Trader is that the one you dragged “Sammyopsite”, myself and the abnormal indivisable load for about two miles along the A6 to the refuge of a layby many years ago, fortunately we was a bit “light on” that day grossing only about 150 tons, sorry we didn’t get chance to thank you for the bottle of single malt you gave us “to keep warm” while the recovery guys made the scene, what a marvellous memory eh’, some tool that Dennis, didn’t Wynn’s try to buy it from you ■■.
thanks harry long retired.

You’ve just jogged my memory there “H” ( The malt must have wiped that day off the “cell” !!) Yes Wynns did buy it from me to use as a ballast tractor, sent it on all the big jobs that Pickfords Sheffield depot couldn’t handle from memory !! Cheers Dennis.

Brilliant simple as that. You lot are ace. Best wishes for the holiday season.

Ah but, did that trader have double helical thrust nuts? Cos if it didn’t, it would have been restricted to 100ton pull, but only on Sundays when there was a Y in the month.
