GUY Big J 8LXB Tractor Unit

Hi Harry,
Well it had the right gearbox a fuller 9 speed, it was one of the last batch of Guy’s but strangely it was missing the last 2 pots and only had the 180. Seems there had been quite a run on 8 potters and they had none left!

Where have you been hiding “H” while the ■■■■ has been flying again on the Big J thread, luxuriating with a glass or three of the “ambar nectar” of life no doubt !!!Cheers Dennis.

Dennis my friend, It would be nice to see you at the doe at the Labour Club doon thi toon on the 28th I personalley would like to meet you & shake hands with you, You seem to me to be a true blooded haulage man, like myself If I may say so, so why dont you come along to this get together & have some fun , as the youngns say, Regards Larry

Larry,as much as I would be delighted to attend your “do” and shake you and “H” by the hand and then enjoy the “crack” for a few hours, However I fear it is a bridge too far for me nowadays, but have no fear I will be with you “in spirit” even if the two bottles are a 100 miles or so apart !!! I have seen that you know what your about and like me grew up in a bygone age of transport which has very little in common with to-days high tech, fully controlled operations, what would happen to-day if all the mobile phones were removed from the cabs and everything returned to sheets and ropes? Mayhem I’d guess mate.Anyhow I’m sure you will have a “good do” on the 28th and after an hour or two you’ll not be able to see across the room for diesel “stour”,the stink of brakes and the smell of rubber!! Cheers Dennis.

And a copy of the days SUN and last Sunday’s NOTW !!
Where did you get last Sundays NOTW from Dennis ? Are you living in a timewarp ?
It’s still being printed up here Dave, well we are in the sticks and word hasn’t got through yet ! On the other hand I could have talking in the “past tense” and not literally you know !! Dennis.
Fair play Dennis you have Friends in the right places with Rupert Murdoch printing you a special edition of
" The NEWS of the WORLD " . Keep them handy Meadow Transport might need them to clean the windows on their Guy Big J 240  .
Cheers Dave.

Could be ex.Machins of Stoke a firm who ran steel from BSC Gartcosh in the 80s

New to Fordhouse transport of Wolverhampton who mothballed it for several years and never registered it, bought by Thomas Ingles, W-ton who registered it as new in 84 and added the sleeper. Think it then went to Scotland before the present owner got it.

Cheers mate, I thought someone on here would know.

Trev, do you remember a company in the west midlands that had some brand new AEC Marshalls that were mothballed due to some industrial dispute and eventually went on the road many years later,i remember reading something about it quite a few years ago,i think they were silver and blue but not positive

Hi Ramone, I can’t remember the name of the firm, they were from Kingswinford, steel hauliers it was a dropside flat, I remember reading an article in the local paper about it, maybe someone on here has a pic.

hi all,
maybe?you mean theodore emms?a steelstock holder, who,as i recall, went on strike just after having some brand new aec’s delivered.i think emms were on strike for over 15 years? and the very very low mileage aec’s were locked indoors.two friends of mine later owned two of them,a marshall 6 wheel flat and mandator unit respectivley.i have plenty of pictures of both, though the government has got me on xmas decoration duty this afternoon    .
regards andrew.

Hello Gentlemen, Andrews right, Theodore Emms, now that takes me back. They stood in the works for years, one or two of us tried to buy them, (unsuccesfully)! My little grey cells may be a bit faded Andrew, but I thought that one was a Mercury? Its a long time ago now! Richard Staniers Guy, I remember it standing in Brian Meridiths, (Fordhouses Transport), warehouse on the Stafford Rd, then at Ingles. Trev was it Chris that sold it when he bought Ingles and Cartwrights? Lots of lorries were bought and not registered, to claim tax write off against profit earned, (you could make profit in those days). The biggest collection I ever saw was at the rear of Sam Andersons at Newhouse. 110s et al, those lads must have earned him some serious money, anybody remember the TV report, when a reporter and camera crew followed one of Andersons outfits, and became all pious about the hours!!! Andrew, I hope that your “Government” is happy with your work, I have also been busy, my crowning glory, moving the crib from storage in one of the barns, I used my John Deere s front end loader, easy job, straight across the terrace, and into position. Oh dear, I forgot about weight, we now have two rows of cracked and sunken slabs! Still I`ve got out of the nightmare that is fairy lights! Cheerio for now.

It does appear to be fitted with a more box & less pipe exhaust :open_mouth:

But , then again it may have been potatoes & beans in them pots for eating around the camp fire , after the parade :open_mouth: :unamused: :unamused:

hiya,
Now then Tamworth you can’t kid the kid’s who’ve kidded thousands
thanks harry long retired,

I can tell you for sure Casual Observer that there was no potatoes or beans down then back two pots, as the Big J 8LXB pulled level with me the carnival stopped for a minute i remember listened to that tick over hunt that only an 8 pot Gardner has.

Harry Gill, are you trying to say that the kids in the carnival on the back of the Big J 8LXB were kidding someone, how do you know that and who?

Hi Tamworth1,
Several of us know that the Big J did exist and forty of them were built.Bewick has bribed Harry with malt whisky to back him up,but don’t tell anyone   .
Cheers Dave.

OK T1,who did the motor belong to i.e. the operator!! It’s alright making outrageous claims but on this thread they’ve got to backed by photographic evidence, which has yet to be done, and a “distant” grainy full frontal shot of a Big J does not substantiate your claim ! More posetive info required please ! Cheers Bewick.

Mr Bewick, the operator was Swiftways who operated from the Tamworth area. Having rebuilt many 8 potters in my time im surprised you need more evidence and will not take my word. Cheers T1
