Brilliant simple as that. You lot are ace. Best wishes for the holiday season.

hiya,
Paul I think that Dennis was on “muckshift” when he sold the Trader to Wynns so he sold them the load as well there you go ready made ballast tractor always had a head for business had Dennis.
thanks harry long retired
Do me a favour “H” I never had any “■■■■■■ in the back of that “little gem” only best quality limestone from Penningtons quarrie in Kendal or maybe a load of dust from Harrisons Lime Works near Shap !!!Cheers Dennis.
harry_gill:
hiya,
Now Dennis that particular Trader is that the one you dragged “Sammyopsite”, myself and the abnormal indivisable load for about two miles along the A6 to the refuge of a layby many years ago, fortunately we was a bit “light on” that day grossing only about 150 tons, sorry we didn’t get chance to thank you for the bottle of single malt you gave us “to keep warm” while the recovery guys made the scene, what a marvellous memory eh’, some tool that Dennis, didn’t Wynn’s try to buy it from you ■■.
thanks harry long retired.
You’ve just jogged my memory there “H” ( The malt must have wiped that day off the “cell” !!) Yes Wynns did buy it from me to use as a ballast tractor, sent it on all the big jobs that Pickfords Sheffield depot couldn’t handle from memory !! Cheers Dennis.
Ah but, did that trader have double helical thrust nuts? Cos if it didn’t, it would have been restricted to 100ton pull, but only on Sundays when there was a Y in the month.
Yea it did have those Helical “thingys” and when it really had to Pull the mate jumped out and engaged the front hubs !!! Dennis.

To answer your question there definitely were 8LXB big Js, I saw one at the white house lights in Barrow, late 70s/early 80s It had a plain red cab, no livery so I don’t know more sorry. Always seemed a daft spec, a premium engine with that cab. Used to ride out as a kid on blue dart lorries out of Barrow, they had some 180 big Js, with a dog leg 6th gear (AEC box I think), difficult to shift into as it had to be where your left leg was. There was one with a fuller 9 speed that would only do 50mph fwds, but (felt like) 30 in reverse. I preferred their Sedd Atk 400s - felt like a proper big truck.
Visited your yard once to see ONL 482M , you kndly gave me some photos of Atkis including this one in McGuffie livery and also MEC 98k - I still have them. Often wonder what became of ONL, Glenn Harley once told me it was still around (in Southhampton I think).
Looking back I think the 70s were the peak time for UK Haulage. Got my HGV 1 since and did some agency driving as a bit of learning/hobby, mainly with Bibbys from Crooklands @ 44tonne, Bargh’s, one nightfreight trip (from next door to your old yard) and a few others. I have enjoyed seeing the old Bewick photos on the ■■■■■■■ companies pages, like many people I wish I had taken a lot more.
Whilst revisiting this thread and the favorite 2011 postings. I remembered this, and thought it might kickstart some discussion, especially for the forthcoming yuletide.
The 8LXB has a swept volume of 851 cu ins (13.93 litres). At 1500 rpm the engine develops 170 bhp.
Maximum output 250HP
And a snippet from a Gardner Forum.
One novelty that appealed to the youthful tearaway in me was that you could engage high range in reverse, planting a 40 foot trailer perfectly in the loading bay at 30 mph in reverse was a trick that I perfected, gaining much respect from the other drivers & several major bollockings from the boss.
Unable to get another 240 Gardner engined ERF due to Gardners commitment to a big army contract we recieved a 220 ■■■■■■■ engined ERF unit which proved to be a complete disaster, this thing revved to 2200 rpm & would hit 75mph on the odd occasions when it was not in the fitters shop with the cylinder heads off (it was however even faster in reverse)

Question no 1,Is this going to be a “proper” award ceremony? Q2, If so am I right in assuming it will be held at a Park Lane(London) venue? Q3 how much will a table be for,say,10 or 12 cost? My guests will be travelling from all corners of the UK (including France!) but also from the IOM,The N. East (and Chester-le Street),Sheffield,Penkridge,Bristol,Cheshire,South Wales and Scotland ! So we’ll all need a room, and I suppose I’ll need one with a lounge for hosting the “before and after” ■■■■ up.Oh! and you’d better book a few rooms for our “better halfs” in the Hilton Mews !! Can’t allow any Ag. from those “who must be obeyed at all times”!!!We can gather for lunch the next day on Harrods Verandah!!! I have ommited to include DtR who I suppose will be the MC for the evening and will be seated at the top table with all the “believers” and he would not want to sit in Siberia round the back of a pillar on our table!!! .But we’ll have one consolation, our dinner won’t be “humble pie” that they will be having on the top table, and I bet he’ll choke when he has to present my award ( A Big J front bumper!) I can’t carry on with this Bollox,“H” and me are off down Leman St. for a decent “craic”,anyone else coming, only 5 in a cab lads yer not in “geordie” land now Bonny lads !! Cheers Dennis.

It would be interesting to see the torque curve because by those figures it seems to be putting out more torque at max power at 1,850 rpm than it is at 1,500 rpm .

It’s Christmas CF,so lighten up please !! One thing I do know is that Santa insists on only having an 8LXB in his Sleigh ( Rudolph and his mates are only for show !) They’ed have to pull like ■■■■ if he had a DD engine in the Sleigh !!! Cheers Bewick.

Bewick I reckon we should book Hampton Court banquet hall and then settle the argument with a food fight between the believers and the non believers in the best traditions of ye olde dayes but we’re going to be well outnumbered .

Sounds like you want a multi drop job done there and as you know I can’t stand Gardner powered wagons and I only do trunking anyway so they’ll have to cancel Christmas and forget about it unless you can find someone else to do the job in time.
And let me guess who’ll be “togged up” as Henry ? The great CF !! go on let them have it my Son,Pork pies, sticky buns, knives and forks, plates, wine goblets (empty of course!) and anything else that isn’t screwed down!!! It will be like being back in the Institution CF ,wont it ? Bewick.

Let me guess I’ll be in the thick of it as usual with turkey, vegetables, gravy, christmas pud and custard flying in all directions with all my ‘allies’ behind me taking cover underneath the tables.

hiya,
Sorry don’t eat Turkey they remind me of an old gaffer I once allowed to employ me for a very short period.
thanks harry long retired.
No lads it will have to be “vegetarian” only do if your going to sling it about !! Have you seen the cost of a decent turkey this year ? No ,the turkey is going home in my “carry out bag” not a bloody “doggy bag” either!! It can have the “inards and gizzard” after we’ve simmered them and poured the juice off to make the gravy !! Cheers Dennis.
