I’ve managed to get hold of someone from Gregory’s. They didn’t say anything about their terms… does anyone know what the initial payment terms would be as I know they do pay weekly once your up and running ?

I don’t know any subbies who get paid weekly, generally terms are “30 days end of month”. You can get a fuel card after your first month although I prefer to use my own. The work pays a reasonable amount, but at the end of the day it is still subbing so you are never going to earn a fortune from it. Some subbies have been there for years, others come and go within a month. It has suited me for the last three odd years although for personal reasons I’ll probably be moving on to something different soon. All you can do is “■■■■ it and see”.

Get in touch with them again and ask them to send you their terms and conditions, better to get it straight from the horses mouth
Okay type HM. What were the initial payment terms? I.e. The first payment, would it be 30 days after end of the month?

I think this may be the case if you’re relying on someone else getting the business, dealing with the customer, scheduling drivers, etc. However, get your own customers and it can be another story. Not the easiest way to earn a few quid but possible to make a decent living - even with just one truck.
What would be the best why of obtaining your own customers? Someone once said that sign writing your truck and getting your name.out there is best?? True??

you’ll get no more business having your name on the truck, it’s a vanity project for a one man band.
Depending on what area you’re in and where your experience lies. I started with exhibition stand builders, as that was my area of expertise. I rang or popped over with a card. A couple of those initial contacts are still customers 15 years later. Try and think what you can offer over the bigger companies. For me it was, and still is flexibility and being local. You’ll never be able to compete in price, so think about something you can add yourself.

And that’s a key reason not to!!

I understand I will never bet the big boys on price. I think being reliable would be a good way of going and I think flexible is differently a good angle. Would leaflet be a good idea?
My advice would be to get business cards and a5 card made up and a very basic web site. Having said that I’ve never bothered with a web site.
The main thing for me is to do what you say you’re going to do at the agreed price and time. You’ll be amazed how far that approach goes - and something most haulage companies can’t get their head around. If you’re going to be late be honest. You’re only as good as your last job.
I only have 8 customers and most of them have been with me at the start. Obviously I’ve come a cropper with some, fallen out with others, gained a few others but loyalty and friendliness on both sides goes a long way.
Good luck.
Thank you Plambert. I’ve been wanting to do this for years. I can’t believe I’m now doing it. I’ve got some experience from driving and my business partner knows about the bookkeeping from his dad’s company. We are not rushing, taken about 18 months so far, to get it right.
I am hoping with a bit of luck and a good driver with us we can do well and all ( including the driver) do well out of this and are successful. I most likely be asking " silly" questions in the near future but I would rather ask a look like a prat than guess and get it wrong.
