I do Felixstowe containers runs for ASDA. Really don’t be afraid to ask, the first few times I had to ask. There are so many places you can drop or collect from. After a few months you’ll have it sussed and the maps of the docks will be a thing of the past lol.
oh, and the docks is nothing like the Stobart programme portrays

Right i will try to keep this thread on topic* and just say congratulations on the getting the job! As spanky says where you running out off? If your down Felix give us a shout and ill get the first (im a skinflint you see ) coffees in down there! As said previously, if in doubt then ask as you will always find a friendly face who will help.
Ill see you down the road at some point…
You know what ■■■■■■■■ to it!I have nothing but love and respect for all of our service personnel! Both granddads served so its in the blood straight away that respect is given!! Granted its a little less for the RAF (its a rugby thing ) but still i respect them all!!
Ive met more “drivers” that think they are the be all and end all than ex service personnel!! Im a great advocate of the fact that every day is a learning curve. I havent carried every load going, I havent been to every customer etc. Even after three years of having C+E I will still ask to hopefully prevent me stuffing up! Shut up Shuttle!!
pretty much what he said
word of advice, don’t park on the softer ground when fully freighted, you might have to phone your boss at a stupid o’clock time to explain why you have just been tugged off by another lorry driver
Lol, once again folks thanks for all the comments I will hold those of you who offered for the coffee’s by the way
I will be running out of Immingham, and from what I can gather, be here, there and every ■■■■■■■ where
Just finished packing my gear ready for Monday, an 80 ltr box full of cooking kit, cleaning kit, fuses, bulbs, pots, pans, brew kit, electrical odds and sods, camper fridge, all sorts of bits and pieces I may or may not need, quilt, pillows, map book (with bridge heights) and ■■■■ ( iPad) Oh yeah, and finally a sense of humour
One question I do have to start with is :
Based on an average 5th wheel height of 1250mm, what is the rough overall height with a container on ?
park the truck and trailer on level ground, then measure from the ground to the top of the chassis where the front twistlock is, that should be around the 5’ region, if it is 5’, then a standard container will be 13’ 6" or a high cube container will be 14’ 6"
the hight of the container itself is either 8’ 6" (standard dv) or 9’ 6" (high cube), just add that to the height measured by yourself to the top of the chassis
there is usually sticker on the side of the container stating the height, also, on high cubes, look on the top corners, there should be some black/yellow chevron stickers

Do I assume then OP, you shall be pulling for DFDS/Speed Cargo/Norfolkline*
Easiest life going mate. Not too much handball, in fact in ten months i only had one of them. Everything else is palletised.
Some jobs are driver assisted but not too much struggle, plastic containers etc which weight less than the box alone.
Whilst we were on there we covered up to Leven and Glasgow in Scotland, down to Cornwall and over to Carmarthenshire.
Another driver did Wick out of Immingham.
If its for DFDS then, you will also cover Seaforth, Avonmouth as well as Immingham.
Heres a diary i posted on here about a week on it for them (well not strictly a week as a driver thru his toys out the pram at the firm) viewtopic.php?f=2&t=61966
Docks at Immingham really are simple. If in doubt give us a shout!
*delete as appropriate depending on which name they are running on this week!!

My usual response applies in this situation!!
Oh how did your latest Cone-ference go?
don’t know what you are talking about
there is absolutely no evidence of any cone-ference here

^^ This…
EXCEPT, just keep an eye out, I’ve only ever had 1, but I had a reefer container that I took to Fowler Welch when they were still on Bird Hall Lane in Cheadle, and when I got there, was chatting to the lad and it just didn’t look right, couldn’t put my finger on it, then looked on the front of the container ‘Caution 10’3" high’ !!..
Only 1 I’ve ever seen, but they do exist, so just be wary, but as SS said, almost all are either standard at 8’6 or High Cube at 9’6, chevrons usually a give away until you get used to it and can do it by sight (high cubes will be higher than your truck, standards roughly same height). Most - but not all - 20’ containers are standard and most - but not all - 45’ containers are high cube.
If you ever go for a 45’ container, make damned sure you’ve got room - ie trailer 5th wheel coupling is quite far back - or your bed becomes storage

But from reading his posts i cannot see how he is being a hero. I think this might be the case of you tarring him with the same brush with the ones you have met in the past?
Your right and I apologise for pre judging the man but I been in this job for a long time and they come out the forces and know it all and even when they totaly ZB it up they are still stood their trying to blame some ZBer else.
They are not the best never have been never will be,they do not know it all never have done never will do,you do not tell you grandmother how to ■■■■ eggs not today and not next week.Sit ,Learn .Listen and keep your gob shut and forget the ZB army its gone"!
And what experience do you have of the different armed forces around the world if you have never served you will never have worked along side other military forces and therefore will be unable to judge them against ours. Something i learnt long ago is to judge each person individualy regardless of race religion or background generally [zb] are [zb] and their race religon or background has very little to do with it.
Hope you better than the muppet I last worked with who was ex forces as he couldnt reverse didnt know bout the trailer brake etc too many other to list
Good luck enjoy
Not everyone is perfect. Today i witnessed a driver who told me 3 weeks ago that he has been driving for 20 years and was bragging how good he is and that i should watch him as i might learn something from him. Well today i witnessed him take 3 shunts to get on a bay with a big empty wide yard to use, and you could tell that he was finding it hard by the look of his face.
Not everyone is perfect and we all had to learn even if they are ex forces, don’t make them any different to any other driver out there on the road

We all have days like that Mickey tbh, lad at our place has been driving over 40yrs, done all sorts, all over the world, last 12mths has done same jobs day in day out and just before xmas couldn’t get his truck into our yard.
I’ve put my truck and trailer into spaces that I didn’t think was even possible, then took 15 shunts to get on the loading area at Thamesport with enough witnesses to make it something I’ll never live down.
