Goods In and Pagers

After reading the Tesco thread about Asbo Tags it reminded me of the use of pagers in Europe. At several places I delivered to they had a system where you hand in your paperwork, passport and receive a key and a pager in return. This then allowed you to wander off to the cafe, shop or back to bed until it bleeped, it may say something like OK, or Report and you could then be in the right place at time.

Does anyone else use them?

yeah,i’ve used them at ‘boots’ in nottingham when i’ve delivered there, they get you booked in,give you a pager, tell you where to park & when it’s bleeped go to the relevant bay.works pretty well.

Howard Tenens in Sharpness give you a portable radio, and the warehouse call you and give you a bay or building number whan it’s your turn.
I believe several old tesco depots had them too, Aylesford? not sure.

Handing in your passport, isn’t that against your “Human rights”

We load at ZF in passau, usually arrive the night before, they take paperwork and give you a pager and a rough load time. There’s no where to go but you can go to bed without risking missing your slot.

All done with mobile phones these days.
Got to give the customer the proper number when booking in, mind…

About 20 years ago, we used to have pagers fitted in our trucks.
If it went off, it meant finding a phone box and belling the boss man.

Cutting edge back then, man.
You tell that to the young, etc…

Sai.sburys allington used pagers…neat

Just been to Sainsburys Dartford and got a pager. Also Danone at Rotselaar do exactly the system you mention.

they had a system where you hand in your paperwork, passport

why did they want your passport?
I never hand mine over, even when booking into foreign hotels I let them take details etc for registration purposes but the passport is not left with them.
Far too easy for some scroat to purloin your indentity.
Also, see note 6 on page 2 of your passport.
“it should not be tampered with or passed to an unauthorised person
I am guessing that an authorised person would only be someone in the employ of the security or immigration services of whatever country.

I seem to remember Opel at Bochum had that system, and a few other places I’ve been to. Gradually being superseeded by texts these days I think. When I was loading out of TK Maxx in Walsall in the last couple of years they texted when the load was ready.

Not goods in as such, but Thamesport used to use pagers to tell you to go in, no display, just an annoying bleeper.

Don’t know if they still do, not been down for a while.

I never hand over passport. They get driving licence

Isle of Grain is handy to get the beeper, time for the cafe then.

They give you a pager in the hard rock cafe to let you know when your table is ready

Lidls like using pagers, but a lot of places now take your mobile number and I haven’t encountered any problems with that .

pagers at lidl depots as well. you know if oyu get given one you will get a 45 in. bleeps with goto bay…

jonboy

Peugeot Ryton used pagers

When they first introduced them at Thamesport, the rechargable batteries used to get nicked :stuck_out_tongue: , when the pager went off some drivers were whipping the batteries out before dropping the pager in the collection box, I seem to remember the management got a bit upset about it :grimacing: Felixstowe had a period of using pagers for one part of the dock.

Reed Bordalls use them , system works well enough.

Not mine, it is only to ensure you give your pager back. They could keep my mother as a deposit if she was still alive
