Don’t beat yourself up over it, write an explanation on your print out, and try not to make a habit of it.

insufficient rest! 8:50hrs rest! please hand your licence to dvla! and take your HGV entitlement off at their earliest opportunity! take some lube to any DVSA! Weighbridge tomorrow ( April 1st ) and say " bugger me, I went over by ten mins! "
From my experience their pretty fair providing your respectful to them, as has already been said they like printouts.

Loads. Didn’t become compulsory on vehicles until 2006
Even though it won’t fit into the 24 hour period be sure to still have at-least 9 hours off.
As said, write the explanation on a printout and as long as it’s not a regular occurrence you should be OK.

Why do I wince everytime I see mention of 15hr shifts? Are there other trades, apart from the odd Dickensian chimney sweep, that work the hours we do?

A printout (and its corresponding manual entry) is the same as making a manual entry on the reverse of a paper chart. So thats how you do it, on the reverse of the chart. Thats what the hours and little boxes are for.
