wish i had a pound for all the wheels i have changed on the inside of those bas***ds. bloody stupid idea.
Agreed, I hated the things. The first time I had one I didn’t realize that the brakes weren’t as good as on tandems (don’t know why, there were the same number of drums) and I almost flung a load of tinplate over the side at the Gilwern roundabout.
Sometimes you have to learn the hard way!
Yers some photo’s I took at Malvern TruckFest over the weekend. Glad to see some locals attended, There were a lot of newer kit there but here’s a small selection of older models…
I like Febry’s Leyland. Could it have been one of their originals? I notice it’s got the Gloucestershire reg.
Just watched an episode of ‘The Sweeney’ on TV and in the lorry park where they were on a stakeout there was a Joseph Rice lorry parked up in the background. It was filmed in 1978. Just thought I would share that…

Breedon Aggregates have taken over Huntsmans.
Happened several weeks ago Nathan. Also Anglo American has sold their remaining share of Tarmac to Lafarge, who are linked with a merger with Holcim.
Cheers Dave.
I think Holcim own Aggregate Industries or at least have a large share. I wonder if the Huntsmans name whether they’ll disappear?
What are Breedons’ like Dave? I wondered if you knew much about them as I know I’ve seen them a lot around Herefordshire way.

Their headquarters are in Derbyshire Nathan. They have one quarry in Herefordshire near Wigmore. The Chief Executive for the English part of Breedon was the Managing Director for Tarmac Western, and lives near to here in Kington. He’s a proper quarry man and with his colleagues on Breedon will keep driving them forward. Yo will see a lot more blue and yellow tippers and mixers around, as long as he is involved.
Cheers Dave.
I’ll have to keep an eye out if these “dormant stone quarries” this way reopen then…I’ll wait and see what the chiropractor says next Wednesday.*

That’ll teach you to race up granary steps with four bags on your shoulder!

You’re not wrong there mate. The agency mate I had today pulled a calf muscle going up a set of drop down stairs on Monday…Nearly dropped the flour on the driver behind him. He still hobbled about with 4 today, bless him. I didn’t though, got to wait over a week to see the chiropractor (so I know what tomorrows’ night out money will be spent on).
surprised no ones mentioned the passing of Stephen (tibby) Bradley of ruardean woodside. another old established forest haulier gone (m & g Bradley). as far as I know no one left to take it over.
Bazz,I was shocked at the state of their yard when I called there a short time ago.Roger Marfell used to look after the trucks and an ex relative of mine drove for them for years.Stuart.Still sad though, used to be a tidy lottle fleet. They also owned a bookies next to Haines motobike shop in Cinderford.
Like the Commer. From the long-gone days when Culley’s did general haulage.
I used to work for R.A. Merediths & Son’s based in Saul, Frampton on Severn. They went under last year (Was a shame as i did like it there) but the brand and assets were bought by another agricultural company. I realise they are not as old as most of the others in this topic but a local Gloucestershire family firm that has gone.
I can’t find any old pics from google but they had been running since the 70’s iirc.
When i left the oldest vehicle their was just after 2005 iirc as they had recently got rid of the pre 2005 ones.
When i left these were the new lorry’s:
