Gloucestershire Firms

leylandlover:
ME Paul or Kingswinfordman,Has Roger Marfell still got his yard at Denehurst? And are Bradleys tippers still kept in the old Marfell Bros Ruardean Glos yard?

Hi Leylandlover ,yes Roger Marfell still has his yard and at present he has a couple of Atkinson 8 recovery trucks in situ as well as his LV cabbed ERF which he still occasionally rallies .
Not sure about Bradleys , but there is on Plump hill a yard that has tippers in it , but the name i think is Edmunds .
Now for a blast from the past , can any one remember Meredith and Drew from Cinderford ,and who did their haulage ? regards Keith

Yers one of R.L.Edmunds from about six years ago. The yard they use was once Edgehills Transport yard up The Plump Hill at Mitcheldean. Meredith & Drew is a blast from the past and I know the names but cannot remember anything else at the mo, must be an age thing…

Biscuits. Meredith and Drew was the biscuit factory at Cinderford and when our Dad worked for George Read he used to pick up cheese’s at Bristol for M&D. I’m sure they had their own transport at Cinderford though…I’ll ask our brother later…

Me.Paul,Yes I can remember Merideth and Drew, our mum worked there  broken biscuits every night.Dont know who ran the transport though.Re;Bradleys tipper fleet,Roger Marfell maintained them and I think there is a family link.Bradley also owned a bookies shop in zinderford.

They also made crisp’s. Their factory was where Engelhards were…

Meredith & Drew, Engelhard Industries. More names that you’ve dragged out of the deepest recesses of an aged lorry drivers addled brain!
Just a minute, I’ve had another flash of memory- Zinderferd Rugby Club on Saturday nights :unamused:
And the dances at the Legion with Harry Twose at the organ!

The Causeway Club, Jacob’s emporium, Rosedales, Woolworth’s and the Mercury office. The Red & White buses at Parragate with the booking office on the corner of the high street. There was a bus company along Woodside street and I think they also had lorries. ‘These are a few of my favourite things’…

Percy Grindle’s Forest Greyhound, if I remember correctly, Paul?
I s’pose none of us are old enough to remember Young’s Bakery?

I remember More’s bakery in the triangle and there was one down by the YMCA. Was there a lorry firm or something to do with lorries on the corner of Woodside St. and Abbey St. there used to be a pub there as well

Hi Paul and ROF , yes Edmunds still have that yard and they do caravan storage as well by the look of it .
I thought Meredith and Drew would get members going , seem to think they had a 22 series cab Leyland Octopus , but also a lot of thier goods went by rail .
The Bevan brothers at Soudley ran buses as well . They had 6 Albion Reivers on coke work ,with a few Leylands . I think they finished the haulage side around 1970 . regards Keith .

Me and our brother were with David & Paul Mellor at the Speech House vintage show on Sunday talking to a guy who drove them trucks for Bevan Bros. at Soudley. Really good chat…

There is book about Soudley Valley,I have it and there is a photo of the Albions in the yard.Another memory bllast from zinafud Westaways grocery.Ps;ROF Richard smoked a pipe young flog smoked cigars.

Sorry, matey, I thought that RR took to the cigars in later life. Just shows what you think you can remember!
I tried cigars (the long, thin ones) for a while after Woodbines, Senior Service then Capstan Full Strength- got through 40 a day of those- before taking to the roll-ups using Old Holborn. I didn’t smoke so many rollies 'cos every time I fancied on, I found the baccy tin had slipped off the engine cover into the passenger footwell, as often as not spreading the precious makings all over the floor. Yet another reason for choosing an F88 over a Mk2 Atki!

We used to come home on a “dodgy” (it’s probably o.k. to mention that after all this time!) in Soudley’s LAD-cabbed twin-stick artic quite regularly but I’m blowed if I can remember the driver’s name. Three or four hefty blokes in that cab was quite a squeeze, even if only from Raglan.

Dad peachy was one of Bevans drivers on the Albion and Fred Bevans son in law drove the Erf artic

Well I called by Roger Marfell’s yesterday, couldn’t see any signs of life so I snapped these…

This old girl?

It’s not outside any more, whether he’s moved it or sold it, I don’t know as I didn’t see him…

Thanks for looking. I thinl we might know one another

I can’t say that I love Leylands, although the Marathon/Marathon 2 were alright…hahaha
