GLASS TRAILERS

Any one remember loading Pilks’ stillages onto flat trailers and tying them on with ROPES! I ran for BRS about 1980 ish in an ERF with a straight 8 Gardner, VOSA would have a fit if they saw rope holding the stillages on to a flat. Just threw nets over and drove very carefully.

They look a real PANE to work with

Sorry - interesting thread actually.

The last place I worked at was wagon and drag flat.
We used to strap the stillages through the bottom and loose ish over the top incase the bands broke and hiab them off onto the sites.
Some of that glass we took was up to 15’ from floor to top and the stillages only 3’ wide.

As you say,careful driving.

This thread is 8 months old. I haven’t worked their since last dec.

Ffs

as ive just started on the glass ive had a couple of questions about how the trailers work.

the unit and specialist trailer.

first you open the back door which also goes towards keeping the trailer square and holds the 2 sides together, and take off the hydrauilc pads off hold the glass in place and take out the mats and bars.

then round to the control panel lower the trailer at the front and back. then when stillages is sitting on the floor you pull forward leaving the stillage where it sits.
the factory will then tip the stillage. when empty reverse back under it close the 2 front airbags and put locking bars on the front trailer axles so when you lift it all back up the front wheels come up as well.

very good would be better if you could video the action.

thats interesting i had no idea they worked like that . what kind of weight will they carry ?

Trailers look so tiny inside

Who you on for Alex. My mates company have 2 or 3 on for Gobain out of Goole. some of the drops he does look a bit tight for access

Wow i never knew they were like that either

Fascinating

this video from the same uploader on Youtube shows the mechanism a bit better  but with Paper

Cheers dave that saves me job. That exactly how it goes.

that looks a very heavy trailer for the amount it carries jd what weights do you get?? how difficult is backing over the stillage to collect it again??

I think your underestimating the weight of glass  its very! heavy!

im always grossing out at over 43 ton and just a smigin under 44.

when you drop the stillage for tipping you only pull out enough for them to tip it so you can stay in line. problem sometimes you do stillage drop and swaps and then it can be difficult to line up for the empty stillage and if its offset it pushes the sides of the trailer apart which is then difficult for putting the bars back in.

Hi JD.Have you been doing glass long  Do you only do UK or all over Europe
I worked for Pilkington out of Holland for the last 10yrs before i moved up here.It must be one of the best jobs left in transport now.We went all over Europe ,as far as Greece and Istanbul to Tromso in the North.Have fun.Mike

we do a regular collection in belgium of concrete pieces for prefabricated houses. they use these trailers at the place where we load to move large pieces of concrete. the slabs they carry are sometimes too big to lie flat on a normal trailer so they stand them on their sides, very clever piece of kit these trailers are.

2nd week mike, i wish i went all over, st gobain cover all off the uk and ireland out of selby. as for europe not to sure about that, there alot of foreign lorries coming and going at the factory so expect they do the euro stuff as back loads which is a shame.

saying the pilklingtons lads from st helens do go everywhere and there is a member on here on for pilks… although the pilk’s lads do like to hang the job out.
