George Cooper & Son (Shafton) Ltd
Hi guys,
I would like to dedicate this thread to past work mates (especially old Jack), colleagues and the family of George as well as to the late George Cooper himself. May the ones who are no longer with us rest in peace.
They were hard times but a darned site more fun than today’s world of work.
The lorries look like tar tanks? Would they be carrying monckton by products ?
Cant remember them and i only live 5mins away from shafton ,a bit before my time;
Hi Dan
Yes they did tar out of Monckton ovens, just across the field and the ovens of Hebburn Monkton, when it was alive. Most of the work was so called hydrocarbon stuff, up and down the UK.
Hi Seth
Years ago that bad bend at the bottom of Shafton was know as Coopers bend. Coopers were well known up to the early 80’s befour the firm finised. The yard is now sandybridge lane ind estate.
Any relation to Ernest Cooper ,I know someone who subbed for them taking breeze out of monckton and coalite before then to brickworks .

Yes Ernest was George’s brother. Ernest’s transport is still going today.
Its changed alot over the years,i used to go to the middle school behind ernest coopers yard in kirkby and was allways going round for the that landed in a empty tipper
It is good to know that Ernest’s offspring are still going with the work, I think they are still tippers but the yard has moved over the road

That’s a cracking old photo of Coopers yard.I remember the company well when I worked for A E Evans. I remember one of our drivers going to Monckton Jarrow for crude benzene instead of Monkton Coke and Chemical at Royston.
And it weren’t me.
