Fun fair wagons

As some members on here are absolutely taking the pish regarding some threads (roping & sheeting anyone…?), I thought this might as well be the right time to start a thread about fun fair wagons, here are some examples to put us in the right direction, feel free to contribute any pic’s

p.s. Congrats on winning first prize

One of Arthur Silcock’s wagons attempting to enter the ground at a private function in Meltham near Holmfirth last weekend .

A section of drystone walling had to be removed to allow access but it was a tight squeeze , the overhanging concrete slab on the roof of the bus shelter not helping much either .

The guy whose hand can be seen in the shot is obviously a seasoned veteran when it comes to guiding a 60 foot rig through a twelve foot gap, but we’ve all had to endure the well meaning assistance of one or two of these characters over the years I’m sure.

Having successfully gained access to the site , the rig is now sited on what must be the only relatively level spot in a 20 mile radius of Meltham and is ready to be built up .

I hear someone described them as ‘foreign garbage’ :open_mouth: . Not a popular sentiment though regarding Scanias. :unamused: My old Boss has lots of them now, and lots of Renaults too, so he doesn’t think so either.

Apologies if I’ve misunderstood the situation, but having initially assumed that this was intended as a serious thread , I have to confess that I’m now beginning to reconsider the validity of that assumption. But since the thread is in fact entitled “ Fun fair wagons “ , then for the time being at least , I’ll continue to treat it as being serious and proffer another contribution.

And here it is :—

The wagon pictured below will most likely be familiar to many , Chris Gardner in particular no doubt.
There’s an in cab video of it on YouTube being driven by a lady , although personally lacking the ability to post links , I feel it’s only fair to inform you that if you’re at all remotely interested, then you’ll have to find it for yourself.

This unit , for your information , was originally purchased by Wm.& C Gaskell , quarry owners and hauliers who were , ( and possible still are as far as I’m aware ) based in Ashton in Makerfield , and was used on low loader work for a number of years during the 1970s .

I will now sit back , bide my time and consider whether or not this thread was indeed intended to be serious , or was initiated merely to wind up Dennis .

That’s a superb shot of a hard working fleet of units and believe me “pv83” they are worked very hard every day as opposed to Fair Ground motors that crawl around from pitch to pitch and maybe cover no more than a couple of thousand miles in the season, if that ! which because they are usually well worn examples with many many '000’s of miles under their belts before they are rescued from the scrap heap they cannot in any way be compared to the pristine hard working MAP fleet ! So if you are some how attempting to connect the two you are way off the mark and obviously clueless !! :frowning: Please explain to me the connection ! Bewick
PS “pv83” don’t fash yersel as in no way are you winding me up as facts are facts and there to be acknowledged for “them that knows” eh!

I remember Ben Bennett’s having W169CVY Foden Alpha 1 probably supplied by Pelican Engineering .

It’s a serious thread indeed, although I couldn’t help myself poking the old ■■■■ for bit of fun… anyway, back to the original purpose of this thread.

I saw those clips on YouTube that you mentioned, sound quality isn’t that great, but it’s nice to see it’s still on the go. One thing I was wondering about though was if these vehicles are exempt from any “green zone” tax, like they have in the greater Manchester area?

Here are some shots I took at the GDSF in 2016 and 2017.

Yet you couldn’t resist, could you? You’re the gift that keeps on giving, I’m actually wondering if CF is your alter ego, as he too never knows when to shut up

Here are a couple of rarities on the showman circuit. They are both LHD French-registered ERFs: the first is an NGC and the second a B-series. I don’t know who either of them belonged to.

[ One thing I was wondering about though was if these vehicles are exempt from any “green zone” tax, like they have in the greater Manchester area? ]

The greater Manchester clean air zone has yet to be implemented pv . It was due to come into effect in 2021 but was delayed for twelve months due to Covid. although the anpr cameras and signage were installed over an area of almost 500 square miles covering the ten GM boroughs at no doubt enormous cost , but then following the backlash from Joe Public , the politicians backtracked somewhat , with scenes reminiscent of the chuckle brothers of Andy Burnham and Boris Johnson blaming each other for the monumental ■■■■ up, and throwing the political hot potato backwards and forwards ……” To you…to me. To me….to you “ etc. etc.

So as things currently stand , the Ill conceived scheme is at present officially “ Under Review “. The signage having been changed ( at further eye watering cost to the taxpayer probably ) to reflect this .

I’m unable to answer your question with regard to showmen’s exemptions to be honest , although my guess would be that they probably will be exempted , but that’s only a guess mind .

Either way , it’s probably academic as in view of the direction in which we appear to be heading under the leadership of this chimps tea party at Westminster , after filling up with diesel and paying the utility bills , it seems highly unlikely that many people will have enough spare change left to even have one ride on the dodgems .

Here is another shot of some fun fair motors, well some of them may be by now as this shot was taken in 1991. Dennis that pv83 is a bit bitchy comparing you to CF and as I type one is wondering what experiences & qualifications he has to be so critical of someone of your calibre perhaps he could enlarge on this and spill the beans so to speak, cheers Buzzer

It’s a bit later than '91 Buzzer, as the FH range was introduced in '93. No fun fair motors I’m afraid, as this is a tidy looking fleet, no kelsa bars in sight!

As for experiences and qualifications, just have a look on the heavy haulage thread, where you’ve recently been posting a lot of pic’s on, there’s enough stuff on there that I’ve done over the years, including footage of a trip to the Ukraine back in 2014, to recover whatever was left of flight MH17.

And as I’ve said many times before (this is the bit most people forget or possibly just ignore), despite what you and others might think, I do take my hat off to anyone that ventures out on his own, especially in these difficult times.

The thing with Dennis though, is his odd “bromance” with Ponsonby, acting like he’s the one in charge, and I and some others wonder why that is. Yes, MAP has got a really tidy fleet (especially his trailers, as I’ve said many times before, but they seem to forget that or possibly just ignore, I asked some genuine questions about his new kit, still waiting for an answer) but all that “professional haulier” and “this job was done by the A-team” ■■■■■■■■ is a bit over the top, don’t you think? As if other hauliers, who have been far more longer in the game are a bunch of amateurs.
All the bling is obviously all personal taste, it’s quite clear that I don’t like it, but whatever floats your boat and all that, but if you can’t take any critism about that, and you’re going behind my back to cry to one of the MOD’s, well, good luck to ya!

Again, the Bewick operation was a household name, as is the Davies name by the way, but Dennis has turned into a somewhat bittered old man it seems for whatever reason. If you can’t stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen…

The NGC is registered on a departement 59 plate, might have been owned by Loste?
