Ford Transcontinental

My old driver John Pike gave me a couple more pics

Jim Chandlers Transcon from Poole 370bhp 15 speed loading in Oporto January 1987

Stuck at the Rothwald Simplon 8th April 1986

On a Ferry next to a dwarf Peter Gilder Scania

No it was on the lift to the lower deck!!!

In the Ist photo of the Transconti, I like the little Ford Trader, very popular in Europe, but really didnt make it in the UK like the older Thames Trader.

Found this pic of a Cabmont Transcon.

Regards Pat

Great pic that ainacs…would you happen to have any more pics of Cabmont?

Sorry Viking that’s the only one!

Regards Pat

Cheers Pat.

The pic of the Cabmont Transcon XMG 143T was one of the lorries that was was put into British Internatoinals fleet when they took over Cabmont.
That one in particular was a 290E and was driven for many years by a driver called Frank Morgan. Frank would like the other drivers do about 3 turn-rounds at St. Malo for Lisbon and Porto. I’ve driven many miles gazing at that number on the rear of a trailer. Sometimes it was hardly legible but that was only due to the amount of brandies consumed. By the way Viking, my son has a few pics of Cabmont. I’ll do my best to see if I can get him to post them.

It would be much appreciated if he could T.O.

Hi another couple of pics of Skillbeech’s Transcon and one of ‘Merv the Swerve’ alongside Kelvin from Poole with Aquila Trailer all courtesy of John Lee

Regards Pat

That snap of the Skillbeech Transcon next to the 88 & the Armstrong F10/12 is quite interesting, if you look the bumper on the Transcon is lower than that of the 88 & the same height as the F10/12, yet they always looked like they were 10ft off the ground, I had one myself on an A plate & IIRC the bottom step was no higher than any other lorry & doing a mental climb up in in my head it was lower than an F88 but it always looked like it would go right over the top of an MG or the like, I’m just wondering should I pop into Specsavers or does the Transcon bumper, in isolation, look really high off the ground to you lot too?

I think the F88 was miniscule compared to the Transcon and I reckon the nearest thing to it in size now is a MAN XXL.

Funny what you say about the bumper and climbing up into in the cab, maybe we were just fitter in those days

This is a good site for Transcon’s www.fordtranscontinental.nl

It appears copyright isn’t observed much these days!

mmmmm. i found some of my pictures on this site, no idea how??!!!■■? as i have never posted them on a site. i asked if i could be credited with the photos, i have negatives to prove it, and was told ýes no problem’, funnily enough nothing has changed.

i have a friend who is passionate about Transconti’s, and owns several. He just sold one, a 6 wheeler tractor, new owner picked it up at this years Gaydon show. There are quite a few on the show circuit, but sadly very rare sight on the road now. i will attempt to post some pics of his soon.
