Foden Tipper Tributes

Perhaps we should list all the bodge jobs you can do to Fodens?
I nominate jamming a Swinford Toll Bridge token between the Cat engine management screen and the dashboard to stop the screen from fading out…

Some more from C W Griffiths.

A rare one which they purchased second hand.

Thank you for that, Regards Larry.

Brian Pattersons unique 6 wheel tractor unit, Regards Larry.

Question to all you still running Fodens as working trucks, what do you do for parts/assistance? Assume theres no DAFaid like service any more, are DAF ok for parts for later ones, or even the CAT machinery suppliers? Or is it just a big pain in the Kingpins?

Cat still make bits for their engines, I gather the C12 is used in plant engines. Cab bits are pretty much Daf CF stock, just Dafs have better shaped doors.
I think the rubber suspension will outlast Dafs’ creak creak setup.

On the cab, one bit of useless information I do know is the headlights and surrounds were totally different to the DAF ones, as one guy driving an Alpha alongside our DAF found out when he crashed it.

I’ve noticed a change in newer ones, but I’m sure the 02 CF I’ve been driving is the same as the Alpha.

Have a look on the web, there ain’t much you can’t source for a Foden.

I purchased the last ■■■■■■■ parts that I needed direct from ■■■■■■■ uk at Wellingborough, most other general running parts are still available even for the older 4000 series.

Comparing pics of a 55 Alpha and our 05 CF, on the Foden the grille and surrounds are one long piece, where as the DAF comes in 3 pieces.

Also see what you mean about the doors, the DAF ones widen out about half way down and go right to the edges of the mud guards, where as the Foden ones are straight.

Yep, and most firms who show Fodens (I’m thinking FG Bond), will fit CF air deflectors on the cab corner to stop the dirt building up on the doors. The biggest failing of Foden Alpha v Daf CF IMHO is the flat doors; Absolutely hopeless on damp roads to keep clean.

Re what Dave and Armstrong said about getting spares, I think Cat still make bits for pre '60s plant. The lady od I know who runs a K reg 3000 series has no problems I understand.

Hmm, Jack Clarke in NNU 914 J, the first half cab that I drove after passing my test at Tilcon! Probably London bound on the M1. One of the 24 tonners with the Gardner 6LXB engine, they were too short to get uprated so were disposed of after a few years. The bumpers were later painted white, Fred Rhead from Oakamoor had it when I started there in 1975 and at that time it was based at our Kevin quarry at Ramshorn near Alton Towers.

Pete.

I’ve got a print of my Dad in that print Pete, he then moved onto TRA115M (S80?) then VWE307S (S81?) before dabbling with one of the Seddon Atkinson 400s JAK105W. He then had probably the best truck of the lot which was a Haulmaster (S108?) with a Rolls 265 in it WWA239Y.
After they sold the tippers out of Ballidon he had the sister tanker WWA240Y which I think had ■■■■■■■ 290 in her but she caught fire North of Parwich one day. I can’t remember what he drove out of Ballidon after that but had some right dogs when he moved to Via Gellia before retiring.
I will dig out some photos when I go round this week and scan them and see if I can post them on here.

Funny you should say that Bamford! I spent a pleasant afternoon with your Dad before Christmas and I gave him a ruck of photos, some printed off of this forum actually, so you maybe in for a surprise haha. He was looking for some pics but couldn’t find them (an age thing probably! ) of his tank that set alight up Longcliffe, and I cannot recall that at all (age thing again!) but I must have been there as I didn’t finish until 2002. I also think that WWA 240Y had a Roller engine, Phil Brown had the ■■■■■■■ (241Y) after Harry Glover retired. Your Dad was on a Foden 300 series narrow cab at Via Gelia for a while at least, I think I finished around that time?

I do remember wrapping Christmas presents for you when we had the Social Club at Ballidon though, now that IS a good while ago!

Pete.

I’m sorry Pete but I distinctly remember Santa giving me my presents.

I won’t bother scanning your photos off here to re-post back on here then :unamused:
I saw them on the side when I went round the other week.

I’ll call in on him tomorrow night and mention we’ve had a natter on’t web

Even Santa has help! Had a rough few years your family, let’s hope that things are on the up now eh. Had some good times with your Dad, I was just a long way down the Pecking Order from him though!

Pete.
