Moose:
it looks more like the one on the left in your middle pic as it had the proper type easy sheet, the type thats been around for years!
it was a quite short w/base 380 s/cab
Most of the 03 reg Volvo’s would have been gone a few years, but Paul Griffiths looks at this thread and will bring me up to speed when I see him in a couple of days time.
Cheers Dave.
i am sure the foden came first, it’s got to be 10+ years ago now, the chassis had just been painted in the pic, i was running the red fl7 in the background at the time
cheers moose
The FO7400 reg Foden which C W Griffiths are still running is an 06 plate. They did have an 07 reg,but it was written off in a accident about four years ago.
Cheers Dave.
Dave - has Paul still got this one?
Yes Steve FO7400 is the only working Foden he has. The other one was smashed up a few years ago.
Cheers Dave.
They weren’t a bad cab the S40, we had a few that replaced worn out S50 half cabs and they improved things a little! Similar to the Big J and Crusader and made by Motor Panels.

Pete.
I imagine it was a more civilised environment than the S50 or S39 types etc…
This survived in action until 1999 – and is now in restoration -
That S50 half cab is being restored by a forum member Fryske, it was ex Tilcon from the London area I think. The replacement cabs were fitted by North Riding Garages at Middleton st George near Darlington, I took several up there and if there wasn’t one to bring back I took a car with me in the tipper body. I took my brother one day, he would have been about 14 years old and he rode in the body from Ashbourne to Darlington! The Gardner engines were also overhauled while the cabs were off, still had the same crappy transmission handbrakes though!
Muckaway:
Smiths had a pair of 3325 8wheelers with alloy Wisbech bodies, with inset tailgates. Closed securely and never leaked but they were sods to close.
That’s right Nathan, trouble was that tarmac would build up on the top edge where it fitted below the lip. Not a problem when you were tipped as you could raise the body and scrape it off, but if you had excess material to return then obviously you couldn’t tip the body up so then you couldn’t reach it! I used to get someone to hold the taildoor up with a rake etc so that I could get behind it, H&S would love that! The other problem was the split taildoor, it was split 50/50 so when it was folded in half you had to be carefull or it would swing up and strike the rear arch, if they had made it a 60/40 split it would have been fine. The body itself seemed well made, just the little niggly things. I suppose if the driver had been consulted first it would have helped.
Yes Nigel, especially the plastic tape where the steering wheel coating wore off. I bet it also had the squashed ■■■ packet between the gearlever and reverse trigger rod to stop it rattling as well!

Gaffer-taping the steering wheel still goes on, Pete; My Alpha originally (I say originally as I ripped off the remnants) had leather trim, but the stitching started to brea, gradually giving me sore hands. I opted for taking the lot off and having the basic wheel, as I’d driven a couple of badly taped up wagons and they were no better.
