Foden Thoughts

Stanfield:
Whats gone wrong with the photos on this thread ? they are twice the size of the screen on mine for some reason, anyone else got the same problem.

Hi John,
I’ve resized mine to 800X600 which fits the screen. Its a bit of a pain, but as you say the other sizes are to big.
Cheers Dave.

My first Foden

was an S20.

Nice pics Sepo: What did you make of the 3000s? I thought they were a good no nonsense site wagon. The ■■■■■■■ 275 I had idled too fast though and made gearchanges a bit crunchy when going from neutral…

I rated it loads, it was an ideal truck for an owner driver, but I was lucky as it came from a good home and was only 2 years old when I got it,Cheers Sepo

gunnerheskey:
Loved those Claribel fodens sepo, absolute class… :sunglasses:

Cheers G… I keep living in the past… Up here in the peak district use to end up like a dumping ground for Selbys, theres loads of 1 man bands started off on one of there old uns…cheers Sepo

Was a Foden demo/photo wagon, then years later I caught it at St. Giles Fair, Oxford!

On some work, on-site/quarry tipper work etc yes, but on this work, other than to stop carrying passengers, why?

Hi Nathan, I took the pic about 3 yrs ago, so considering the mileage the Fair wagons do, & the size of the CAT/■■■■■■■■ lump she’d have in her, she probably is still pulling!

Light weight and , at the time of purchase, cheaper insurance. We had loads of them on eightwheeler tipper and powder tanker chassis and they ran all over the UK.

Pete.

Has anybody driven Foden dumptrucks? I remember Smiths had one, a 6wheeled half cab thing, painted yellow and made a hell of a noise (and smoke). It was nicknamed “the Iron Lady” and was regularly loaded with about 40ton of ballast to carry to the washing plant at Stanton Harcourt quarry.

Driven plenty of them when I was a mechanic, all six leggers with 220 ■■■■■■■ engines and the 12 speed g/box. We also had an elderly one with a 6LW Gardner in it but that was just used for emptying the tar plants. Also had a couple of Atkinson dumpers, also with 220’s but with ZF boxes, but these were smaller than the Foden’s. Everything was replaced with Aveling Barfords eventually.

Hi Pete, weight & insurance yeah OK, but it must have been like sitting in a shoe box with windows, even on day work you carry a bag, lunch-box, flask, coat etc, I have my lunch box/flask in the middle of the cab in case I wana bite while going along, were there ledges/trays etc in there? cos there doesn’t look to be the room!
Regards Chris

I seem to recall a hook for your coat Chris, everything else lived on the floor under and around the seat! Ours had the S50 cab with the forward angled windscreen but were otherwise similar. I remember going from Ashbourne to West Brom as a passenger in one to tow one in, squatting down between the seat and the door wasn’t the comfiest position! I did take my young brother in one from Ashbourne up to Darlington to be recabbed but I made him ride in the empty tipper body, it did stop dry for him ha ha.

Did they also sell a few tippers and artics with a half cab?

ARC had some half cab mixers. I read somewhere if you bought a half cab, it came with a briefcase…apparently it compensated for loss of storage space.
