Foden Thoughts

Hi,I read in classic & vintage a while ago the paul hyman S39 was going to be restored, anyone know if this happened.I loved the fodens when I was 11 yrs old travelled miles in a S36 YWR 533G,then a S39 UWT 463L for E BUTLER & SONS (MALTBY) loved the sound of the gardner 180 with foden 12 speed box in the right hands they sounded great, keep this thread alive, great memories.regards paul.

Edward Beck & Son Ltd driver Vernon Macro pulls out of the Vulcan Foundry Works at Newton-le-Willows in 1964 with an English Electric locomotive on board destined for British Hydrocarbon Chemicals Ltd.

This is the first foden i rode in many moons ago.

I created a thread for this Foden but I’ll pop a few in here too…
Campey’s old Foden, can anyone give some info on model, engine, etc etc

Hiya …here we go how many mistakes can you make…possibly a gardner thats easy as it says gardner all over them.
maybe a 6lw120 or 6lx150…could be a foden diesel (stroker)is it a 5 speed or maybe a 12 speed we need to look for
the extra lever…ET thats sheffield reg…maroon paint under the broken badge could say richard johnson (ambergate).
John

Also its Model is an S21.

We have the Ex Kendrick’s of Walsall S21 tipper that used to be owned by Paul Hyman. I am interested in you saying he re-engined most of his Fodens. We ahve heard rumours that ours may have a 180 Gardner in it rather than the 150 but do not know for sure - and i have to say, it does seem to have a lot more poke than others i have seen/driven. Do you know this waggon, and if so do you think it will have been re-engined? I suspect it probably will have!

Hi there, I dont know Paul personally but I recall that he ran a S39 cabbed Foden 8 wheeler that he fitted with a Gardner 230 Turbo! He modified his trucks to suit himself I think. One easy way to tell a Gardner 150 from a 180 is that on the cylinder head the 180’s had extra head studs, if you look at the rear or front of the heads there is a smaller 1/4 whitworth spanner sized stud and nut between the two 7/16th size ones on the 180 LXB which the 150’s didn’t have. The engine number should be stamped on the top of the crankcase near the left hand front cylinder block holding stud, near the compressor, and there should also be a number on a plate on the front half of the injector pump. At the end of the day Paul may well have had the pump ‘doctored’ with a stronger governor spring etc, a lot of 150’s went as well or better than the 180’s and later 201’s!

Pete.

Thanks Pete! I will have a look at the weekend and see if i can see the tell tale signs! Its lovely doing 55-60 down the motorway and passing all the modern lorries! And with 12-15mpg too with no Adblu in sight!

Just to remind you what it looked like in pauls ownership.

UWT 463L I travelled many miles in this from new, with the driver being reg marshall, sadly no longer with us.

I’ve got the CVC issue with that S21 in it; The first one I bought after I saw it on the road somewhere. CVC was rather good back then…

Not old enough to have driven one but I gather it was because the S21 had a resemblance to MM when viewed from the front.

I thought that was a version of the ERF KV? Might be wrong as I’ve had little to do with them.
