Well, after driving our 54 reg 8wheeler with 400 Caterpillar this week, (my 6w was being serviced) I’d put my head up my own arse to say the Alpha is one of the greatest ever 8w tippers and should be in the same class as the Mammoth Major, just a different era. Factor in the increased payload (the one I drove carries 19800t) to our new MANs (carry 18800 absolute max) and it shows what a good earner the Fodens were.
Never driven one and never would bags of ■■■■

…If you’d have been driving in the 60/70’s you would ,if you wanted to drive
it was what was available and plastic sandbach specials was high on the list.
plus if you could drive a 12 speed foden you was in demand.

All the things you have driven only means, you are not old enough to have driven a proper lorry.
And i dont really care what you think! I have found the best people to work for in this game and will stay there until i get out of this ■■■■ game
You might’ve driven x y and z, but you say Fodens are ■■■■ but have never driven them. I’ve heard Ford Cargos were ■■■■ but I have no experience of driving them so I wouldn’t say they were. Fodens have never let us down, and have shown up demonstrators we’ve been given on regular occasions. Yes they were a bit dated but they kept going without all the electronic crap that goes wrong with so many modern motors.
Saw them enough times when i used to go with my dad in the school holidays thats enough to make my mind up they are ■■■■.It wasnt long before they were in the scania mirrors!Never broken down in a scania or a volvo either but i have with a daf and a merc

The wagons you have driven are modern motors. The Fodens were from a different era.A good solid reliable lorry.A good artic, also one of the best lorries for tipper work that was ever built. Its a shame that the parent company stopped building them and continued with Daf which is by far an inferior lorry. As for comparing driving a lorry now to driving one in the 60’s. The 60’s drivers could drive with all sorts of gearboxes. The modern driver in comparison is a steering wheel attendant.

I hear what you say Nathan, and speaking as an operator of a large fleet during the 70’s/80’s and 90’s I can honestly say that I never ever considered Fodens as suitable for our operation, they died a death in 1980 as the origional marque, and then what came later via Paccar was just as bad or worse.IMO ERF were a far superior motor than the Foden and the Atki was better than both of them ! But then I’m only comparing like for like British motors, now the Scania !!! was in a different class altogether!!! Keep your elbows in mate, catch you on the ice,Cheers Dennis.

Couldnt agree more.I wasnt comparing fodens of the 60s to modern day motors you couldnt possibly do that.I meant anything from 88 onwards trucks i remember. In their hayday i am sure they were pretty good but the when you look at photos there were any good ones then was there!
Bud, you sound like you belong to my generation recalling trucks from the late '80s; Fodens were way better than the gutless Volvo FL7s that many tipper operators ran. Foden 4000 day cabs were more spacious than most Euro lorries, the 3000s were a gaffers motor but bear in mind these came out during the recession hit early 90s and their basic lightweight cabs were better than spending out on refurbishing life expired models still with 70s technology or the luxurious and overpriced European motors available then.
Proper lorries built for drivers. These firms never advertised for drivers and the wages in comparison were much better than they are these days. These motors did higher mileage than most of the modern lorries.
Cheers Dave.
Born in 81 and nearly 31 so yeah from your era.My dads done artic bulk tippers all his life more or less and i was pillion from the earliest day i can remember so seen plenty of crap about.Ok i have been spoilt having big engined trucks and my first one was a scania 400 which my dad had got new.i cut it on bulk work with that until it was sold. Its the smallest i have driven but i loved it.The fodens, erf’s and atkis could never keep up when i was passenger i do remember that
They were certainly suitable for operator’s in my area, Tilcon, Hoveringham, Hulland Products, Richard Johnson and Nephew, Longcliffe Quarries, Woods of Kniveton, Frank Wright’s, Breedon Limestone, Sellers and Kent, David Mellor, Slinter Mining, A T Richardson, Redland, Barlow and Hodgkinson, Sammy Longsons etc and many others all operated sizeable Foden fleets.
Pete.

Some knobheads on here
I am clearly not as old as you and how many operators run those trucks now! What a berk.Nothing to do with glory driving just wasnt born early enough!

There are Foden six wheelers with 450 Cat engines around here. Some of the Foden artics with Cat or ■■■■■■■ engines which have now gone would live with anything you mention. Its all about knowing how to drive them.Another factor is that none of the motors you mention other than the Premium would tare in as low as a Foden.Lorries are about making money
