Foden Thoughts

Bud143:
I am clearly not as old as you and how many operators run those trucks now! What a berk.Nothing to do with glory driving just wasnt born early enough!

They dont run them now (and a lot have ceased trading anyway) because you cant buy one! :unamused: But when you could, and I am not talking about the Alphas etc, they still bought them! They made good money with them as well, you show me an eight wheeler now that can carry a 20 tonne payload running at 30.50 gross, they barely get that on running at 32 tonnes. But then if the criterior for running a truck is how quickly you lose sight of one in the mirrors then I obviously learned nothing over 40 years in the industry.

Pete.

So you choose what you drive then hey ■■? i think we all would like to do that and could all quote what we would like to drive but it dont work that way ,as for these old motors not being around now, its that they dont make `em anymore. The computer drives the motor now we just steer them :open_mouth:

Yeah i know they are there to make money.Nobody around me runs fodens and you wont change my mind i still think they are ■■■■! I know the renaults are light but thats down to the owner which lorry the operate. Our premium Is half a tonne lighter than my merc and i work for a farmer but he obviously never did his homework when buying it. I am on artics not eight wheelers aswell bulk grain not bulk aggregates

We are asked our opinion yes but its his decision at the end of the day

You wont change my mind they are ■■■■ simple as.Ok they were light and you could earn that bit more but who cares.I have been lucky i will admit that infact i have been spoilt but hey would you turn it down?Didnt think so.Bedtime up at 3:30 keep biting folks

Bud143:
And i dont really care what you think! I have found the best people to work for in this game and will stay there until i get out of this [zb] game

With your attitude that wont be to long :unamused: you got to be up by 3 30am whats that for a nappy change.

They’re not around much because they’ve not been built for almost 6 years (it has been mentioned). My Dad had a Scania demo R440 auto about 18months ago, meant to be for 2 days…he took it back after a day he said it had a nice cab but was rubbish for quarry work and took an age to get out at roundabouts…he’s driven an 02 reg Alpha from new. Just because something has spotlights, can push 60mph and has a few stupid stickers proclaiming V8 whatever doesn’t mean it’s any better for the job.

I know they havent made them for ages! Your right about the automatic being no good for quarry work but anyone with any common sense wouldnt get an automatic for that job.My opinion is fodens are ■■■■ for artic tipper work simple as that so why waste your time going on i wont change it!Keep the v8 comments coming i have heard them all before usually from people that are either jealous because they will never get one or by old folk cos a young bloke has got one!

bud,
we have the problem yuongsters only whant to drive big cars horsepowers computers tv massiv stereo, litle work big money ,sunglases and keyring whit chain. dirty hands and proud of own work(you can do whit any tool,if you are aDRIVER/WORKER. regaard,s, from eastern boarder of EU(ps unfortunaly in eastern there is folk,s like we where, they are here already coming to west soon.hoping a god workingday to everybody, could drive FODEN,S if we could had buy them ,my 53

I never drove the scania 580 full time i drove it for three weeks to help a local livestock company out when i had me pubs. Was offered a job there but turned it down for a job paying more money so no to me the trucks not everything. You lot just seem to get your knickers in a twist because someone said they dont like something.Well tough ■■■■ its my opinion which i am entitled to as are you.Trot on home and get your mums to wipe your tears up.

never sayd that i like all work and all tools, just never say never, have been times you can,t choose the job,s .inside you,r a good pal i,ll think
my mum and wife have don it often and will i afead, bizz not easy every day.once tought i,m greatest of all ,but it,s long ago

I don’t know everything about this job but I have been messing with trucks all of my life. My 6w Alpha is the best kit we have ever owned but it has its faults like everything else,2nd best has got to be a 51 reg alpha 8w. I have run Scanias too and they are a good truck but like most of the current tippers they were not really made for the UK market but adapted to it.
Most makes of trucks have their good and bad points and often a good dealer can make all the difference. We have a 58 reg MAN that has probably been to the dealer for repairs about 25 times, my 06 Alpha has been 3 I think, and thats what makes a good truck not a load of bling and bullsh*t
I don’t know what our young friend bases his opinion on that Fodens are so bad perhaps he would like to explain. Mark

As Mark aka pursy put it the Foden has done a good job for most hauliers.Everyone has opinions about lorries Bud and you are entitled to yours.I don’t think anyone on this forum will start crying and a good percentage of us have lost our Mums. Perhaps we will pretend to cry when we have a beer   .
Cheers Dave.

I think bud143 deserves a little sympathy really. To go through life and never experience a 14 litre ■■■■■■■ with a 13 speed Fuller behind it is one of lifes true hardships, not to mention only experiencing the tail end of when road haulage was remotely interesting as a little boy riding with his dad. I don’t suppose your dad used to tell you about the 525 ■■■■■■■ powered Fodens and ERFs that used to make mincemeat of his Scania whilst you were at school, did he bud?

Funny you mentioned a 58 plate MAN ,im driving a 6x4 MAN 440 auto on a 61 plate ,its a hire motor and i would rate it as 1 of the worst motors ive ever driven ,its gutless and the gearbox is diabolical,if this is progress then can i have my old D reg Foden back with its 320 Gardner ,at least it went well

I think you’ll find he’s driven more miles in reverse than you’ve driven forwards. We share the same opinion regarding autos on quarry work; my “■■■■” Foden will p155 all over our Daf autos on our tip and is easier to tip and spread shingle/stone plus better control for slow reversing in tight spaces.
