Foden Thoughts

Muckaway:
The 51 plate Alpha unit is the first one I’ve seen of that age. Smiths have 2 02 plate old style rigids plus Dads’ new style unit. I was told it was because the new cf cab came out for units first, and Dads was photographed quite a bit when new, allegedly being the first in Oxfordshire.

I used to drive an alpha 1 eight wheeler which was an 03 plate for Barry Wood Hire from Buxton. He had two of them with 400 Cats in.

Have you any longcliffes foden S36/39s please.

I haven’t sorry :frowning:

I saw this today on Goole docks.

Image0031.jpgThe Foden I drive every day . Had it since new on Sept 1st 2006 . been chipped to 380 HP . When I had it new I was offered a chance by the Fleet engineer to go out for the day with a chap from the Foden factory . I didnt mind , always willing to listen to anyone . chatting to him I thought at all our Fodens were 12 speed , but in fact they all are 16 speed , he said if someone wants a 12 speed Eaton box ., they put a 12 speed sticker on it but they are actually 16 speed , better on the hills . No one at our place knew , the fleet engineer thought I was taking the p…

Hi Puckshole, I’ve seen your wagon around, Us Smiths drivers don’t get around Stroud way (don’t want to tread on your toes ) but I usually do the Cotswold stuff; I’m the one who uses the Highwayman layby (was the Glider) at Aston Down. I’ve apparently got a 12speed but I’ll have a go splitting the bottom range.
Here’s a myth that’s been around these parts; That Cullimores’ bought some of the last Alphas and kept them off road for a while in order to register them as 07 plates. Any truth?

The gearbox is the same in the 12 and 16 speed Alpha, the difference is the shift control. The one with the Eaton control on will only work as a 12 speed but take this off and fit the Daf style control and it will work as a 16 speed.

I get where you’re coming from; Mine’s got the Eaton top (range/split all on one switch) but our 06 and 56 plates are the Daf 2 switch type you say. Would this have any bearing on why mine does 2mpg more than the others? Our 02 recently had the Daf top fitted after the old one broke.

Mine came in in July 2006 as an 06 plate , but by the time all the bits & pieces fitted , ( CB , on board weighers , Beacons etc camera etc ) it was late Aug so they registered it 56 from Sep 1st .
The sister one BJE came in Sept 2006 by put on the road Jan 1st 2007 . These as well as a 56 plate mixer were and are the last ones . I notice that a 12 plate Daf mixer has been put on the road now , it came as a 61 plate end of last year but never used until Thurs last week .
Im sure you will be able to split the low range including Reverse I can on mine

This one was one of the last Fodens made. Not sure when Paul put it on the road.

Foden 46 will be retiring next month and so will this that he has had from new  .

Puckshole, do you have a choice on Cullimores’ whether you go on the steel muck tippers or the alloy aggregate ones? I prefer muck to aggregate but virtually everyone else hates muckshifting. I tried to persuade our lot to have heavy muck wagons and some lightweight alloy ones but we standardise steelite agg bodies…that look half loaded on muck

We used to get a tenner a day when you carried Muck . That was for digging out the back to carry Aggies back to whichever Depot for the Mixer plants , but that was stopped a few years ago when the resession started . I think we only have about 6 Alleys on the road now . When a new one truck comes if are offered it , it up to you whether to take it .
When I started I had an H reg ERF , followed by a K Reg ERF , then a L Reg ERF , followed by P reg ERF , then the W Reg ERF which is still on the road . Then the one I got now , This is the 1st one Ive had from new .

Does anyone know anything about the prototype Foden that was built with the Daf XF cab and ■■■■■■■ Signature engine. The story goes that Daf persuaded Paccar not to develop it for production.

The Foden Falcon? I think someone’s mentioned it on this thread; Daf crapped themselves at the prospect of helping create something that would be much better than the 95xf.

Is this what you mean pal

Paccar seriously need to consider resurrecting the Foden brand; That with a big Cat or ■■■■■■■ engine :stuck_out_tongue: :stuck_out_tongue: :sunglasses:
