One of the tidiest tipper fleets in Yorkshire is that of James Cooper & Sons from Killamarsh , Sheffield .
The Fodens in the fleet are a credit to the owners and drivers.

This photograph was taken at the Barnard Castle Truck Show , a few years ago.

Cheers , cattle wagon man.

The same Foden , photographed a few hours later , with assistance from headlights shining from behind me.

Cheers , cattle wagon man.

Yes CWM they have a tidy fleet, I used to run with some of them years ago. Killamarsh is actually in North East Derbyshire by the way.

Pete.

It`s many years since I last ventured into that part of the open world .

Cheers , cattle wagon man.

Don’t know really I can’t remember downings running these and I live right opposite their gate hole. Might have been a bit before my time. Could it be a demonstrator perhaps

We had a sister truck to that S83 at our quarry, the number plate would soon have been moved though and the bumper wouldn’t be straight for long either!

Pete.

It looks like Fodens demonstrator from what I can mind it would spend more time on the regular spares deliveries runs than demonstrating. Eddie.

Fiege Merlin bought 60-odd 4000 series units in 1997 for their Sainsburys contract running out of Rye Park, Hoddesdon. I had the pleasure of driving one on London and Home Counties work. They had Cat C10 engines and Fuller nine-speed Roadranger gearboxes. We used to drive them clutchless (or at least some of us did), while some people abused the drivetrain and burnt out the clutch brakes, but overall they were a hardy old truck. They were a strange spec for supermarket work, with 4.2m wheelbases if I recall correctly. The registrations were R6xxAMX and some of them ended up at Evans Transport in Wales after their time at Sainsburys.

Foden 4000 with a brand new Lamberet fridge.

A wet Saturday evening in Rye Park (sorry about the pic quality) with most of the units parked for the weekend.

In 1999 we had a trio of Alpha units join the fleet, with M11 ■■■■■■■ engines and Eaton boxes. This one was a few days old when I took the pic. Note the Frigoblock-equipped tandem axle fridge. The units were 6x2 as we had started backloading goods from suppliers and also doing a bit of traction work for Buntingford depot where they loaded their trailers to max weight.

Surprised and delighted to hear that you could still buy Fuller 9sp tractors in bulk as late as '97. I hope some are still around! Robert

I just knew you’d appreciate me mentioning the Fuller box Robert! I spent a bit of time with the one of the main men at Foden a few years later and he informed me that there were rumours of someone earning a very large drink out of that deal as they really weren’t ideal for the job in hand, running through central London during rush hour. The odd one still came up for sale in the CM classifieds until recently, only a couple of grand.
