3210We had a sister truck to that S83 at our quarry, the number plate would soon have been moved though and the bumper wouldn’t be straight for long either!

Here’s DDM421S clinging on to life
Craig 111:
Fiege Merlin bought 60-odd 4000 series units in 1997 for their Sainsburys contract running out of Rye Park, Hoddesdon. I had the pleasure of driving one on London and Home Counties work. They had Cat C10 engines and Fuller nine-speed Roadranger gearboxes. We used to drive them clutchless (or at least some of us did), while some people abused the drivetrain and burnt out the clutch brakes, but overall they were a hardy old truck. They were a strange spec for supermarket work, with 4.2m wheelbases if I recall correctly. The registrations were R6xxAMX and some of them ended up at Evans Transport in Wales after their time at Sainsburys.
Foden 4000 with a brand new Lamberet fridge.
A wet Saturday evening in Rye Park (sorry about the pic quality) with most of the units parked for the weekend.
In 1999 we had a trio of Alpha units join the fleet, with M11 ■■■■■■■ engines and Eaton boxes. This one was a few days old when I took the pic. Note the Frigoblock-equipped tandem axle fridge. The units were 6x2 as we had started backloading goods from suppliers and also doing a bit of traction work for Buntingford depot where they loaded their trailers to max weight.~ Craig
i drove for merlin at steelpark wednesfield on the british steel contract around that time.they used to send a couple of us down to hoddesdon a few days just before xmas to help out with our units

Thank you, After Lewis owned it , It became one of Braithwaites fleet, Then Tilcon, Then Sellers & Kent whom I bought it from, I sold it to Brian Patterson & Sons from Perth in 1975/6 Who ran it on long haul work on Fertillizer Basics from Lieth down south & reloading with Agglime for Perth, It was a good old motor It used to pull like a train & returned 10/11,MPG, with a top speed of 48 MPH, Happy days Eh, Regards Larry.
This was a big heavy beast -

I think they were a much stronger cab than our S50 half cabs, our dumpers with that type didn’t suffer from the cracking around the screen that the S50 cabbed road wagons did. Quite a daring move really for Foden, but then they were never afraid of experimenting with different designs over the years as their TwinLoad and two stroke engine proved. Didn’t always get it right though!

hiya,
Drove one of these (could have been either) for a distance of about 200 hundred
yards with F F Robinsons drivers permission and believe me it was far enough it
wasn’t only my view the regular driver hated the thing, I was driving a Bristol at
the time for the BRS and it was a dream to drive by comparison.
thanks harry, long retired.

Llanwern that’s a blast from the past, Richard Thomas Baldwins, RTB, I used to take fire bricks into there in the earley 60s from Henry Fosters Brickyard at Backworth Northumberland when I drove for Smiles for Miles, I used to load back from a firm called Lewis, I never met the bloke everything was sorted over the payphones in those good old days, I used to load small coils of steel for the Singer Sewing Machine Co, at Glasgow, How I miss all this now that Im an old man, Who loved the job, Regards Larry.
i got sick of the sight of llanwern , they had 600 tons of lime per day from buxton , so it didn’t matter which local firm you worked for if it was a tipper job it was llanwern .
